I look back to when San Jose was nothing. In fact we were propping that team up with special considerations. Then low and behold a mere season or 2 later that team won the championship.

I think too many people are building a keeper fantasy team for years to come instead of playing the game now. I have always said who knows if half of us will be here in 2 seasons so why do we place so much value on high end prospects who wont have decent ratings for 3 seasons??

I am not going to spend hours and hours just making offers including players you dont like, the messages go something like this:

Me -"Hi is X player available?"
You -"yes - make me an offer"
Me - "how about Y player for X player?"
You - "nope, dont like him"
Me - "Ok how about Z player for X player?"
You - "nope, dont like him"
etc.
I find just the opposite

Teams that are interested in a player don't even make an offer now days, they expect you to make and offer trading them the player they want.

GM: Is Jeff Carter available?
"Canes: The thought of trading him hasn't crossed my mind but anything is possible.
GM: What would it take on my roster to get him?

It's amazing, now I'm put in the position to offer my player away to this team because they won't open up the talks with an offer. For all I know they aren't serious about acquiring Carter and are just fishing to see if they get him for something less then they would have offered.

The team looking to acquire the player should be the one that 1st proposal to the table to show that they are interested and serious. This way both teams have a clue if the deal is workable. I hate looking up and down someones roster for 20 minutes researching prospects to only find out that the other team was only looking to move a 5th or something.

If the deal needs haggling, then it's not going to happen. I don't haggle in real life and not here. There's plenty of teams in this league that do straight up deals... best to know the GM's that go the straight up route and those that enjoy the haggle. Trying to haggle a straightup guy will not happen.

Most all negotiations fall through with me are ones where only my players are on the board, and only ?? and +'s from the other GM... example Thornton for 65ov, + and a pick

The secret is to know which GM's are which and try to adjust your negotiations to that. There is no right or wrong way. Just a bunch of round and square pegs

Thanks Doug. When I send trade offer pms I ask about the player I am interested in and I always list the players, prospects that I am willing to send back. I also usual leave it open for negotiation as well.

Same here, if you are interested in a player of mine please have a few guys that you would move for him. I haven't made too many trades in the last little bit because I don't really need to. My team has been playing pretty good lately.

Thing I hate most is when I come up with an offer for a player that is fair. Then a GM tells me that they don't like the offer for reasons x, y, z. Then I ask the GM to look at my roster and tell me who they like because it is easier for me to come up with something that might work. Instead of helping the process the GM says since I want their player I should come up with the offer. Or they list 1 player they like, I make an offer and then they say no and make 0 effort to help the process at all.

If the offer is not fair then I can understand a GM being reluctant to talk trades much. Straight up deals, while simple and easy, don't happen that often. Every deal should involve a certain amount of negotiations and flexibility by both GMs. Heck one of my favorite aspects of this league is the negotiations and discussions. I love hearing and talking with GMs over certain players, some of my favorite trades have taken the longest to get done. I know some people like straight up deals, but at some point a GM has to move a little bit in their opinion and be willing to discuss things.

Seems like my methods aren't enjoyed around these parts. Bah well.

If you come up to me, and ask me about a player on my team, I'm not going to be the one to make the first offer. When I'm expected to make the first offer, if I'm inquiring about a player, I ask for lists so that I don't make straight up crap offers to start. I want to know what the cost is for said player.

And if I make an offer if it's not what you're looking for... a lot of times, it's what I think I can afford to pick up the player, to make the rest of my team fit.

I want to ice the best team I can, but I also don't want to feel obligated to trade because someone is kicking tires around my team. Yeah, trading is down. As far as I can tell, there's only about 3-4 teams who are in "rebuild" mode, there's another handfull of teams who are borderline playoff teams, a handfull of teams trying to better their playoff position, and then the elite, who have the players no one else can afford, unless they are willing to risk the farm to get them...

I don't like making lateral moves for the sake of making lateral moves. I have to like the player I'm getting, and see a better fit.

I may be in the minority, but there's no rules on how to engage in trades, and truth be told, I'm not really losing any sleep that I haven't made a move in the last little bit, now that my roster is showing some signs of life.
