Gonazalez is basically a better version of Mac.

Well, that's actually a fairly decent stop gap signing. The jays are going to tank next year and between Gonzo and Mac, we'll have mediocre production at SS next year and maybe the year after while a prospect, either through trade or the draft is developed.

Yep, both guys will bat 9th I would think but the defense will be very good.

Sub 700 production in terms of OPS for him most seasons and a lot of strikeouts. It's a stop gap move for a team looking for a viable long term option.

Different alex gonzalez...essentially the same player as SS for the Jays as years past. It's not the worst move ever.

Signing Alex Gonzalez is also a way to get Scuatro to not take arbitration. With Scuatro gone we get that extra 1st round pick.

Would much, much rather have Scutaro but I guess he's priced himself away.

I think it's more an issue of him being a type A free agent. Over the course of Scutaro's career last year is a major abberation and the guy is 34 years old. I'm not sure if it's particularly prudent to give him a multi year deal for a good chunk of change for the Jays. Other bigger market teams can afford to try it and end up paying him 5 million a year to be a 250 plate appearance utility guy if he fades off. Whereas the Jays would get stuck playing him every day and having him be a 700 OPS guy. If the Jays can get a decent draft pick for letting another team sign him it's a good move for them.
Given the anticipated market for free agents this off season I can see Scutaro ending up like Orlando Hudson where it's a long time until someone finally picks him up. Many MLB GM's are going to be leery about handing out money this winter.

According to the New York Daily News, Halladay has told the Blue Jays he is willing waive his no-trade clause to go to the New York Yankees, setting up a potential bidding war with the rival Boston Red Sox.

The newspaper reports the Blue Jays have targeted catching prospect Jesus Montero as their main focus in any deal for Halladay.

Well with that name he can be the teams saviour.
Who wouldn't be willing to move a no trade clause to go to the Yankees. Every year they have a chance to win.

You'd like to hope the new guy is simply being smart, publishing this and trying to make it seem like the Yanks/Sox are going to fight over this guy to make someone over pay...
Well, you hope.

Halladay's camp is telling the Jays to trade him before Spring Training or he won't waive his no trade clause.

Great move the Halladay camp, force it to either happen right away or to let him play the year out.

The price is going to be higher now than mid season anyway, so it could be in the Jays' best interests to have a spring training deadline to force the bidders to ante-up to.

And because of it the Jays get 2 picks for Scutaro. I that gives them 8 picks in 1st 3 rounds. Could be 9 pikcs when Barajas signs elsewhere. But don't get your hopes up as I believe the Jays failed to sign 2 or 3 of their top 4 picks last June.

Well, with the 3 top picks they didn't sign, one had a injury that was rather significant so they walked, and Paxton is nuts (suing his college for some trivial thing)
So really, only one guy they didn't sign was a disappointment.
Having 8 or 9 picks will help them to build a good core of prospects, which they desperately need.

That is IF and only IF they decide to pony up the cash necessary to draft the best player available. Maybe with a new GM, they can play this game, but the BJs during the JP era were completely inept when it came to this.
Time and time again, they'll cheap out on picks and go for 'signability'. It usually gets worse the more draft picks they have, because for whatever reason it means they still spend the exact same total amount on them, which actually means less $ per player drafted.
Forgive me for being so cynical, but I've seen this song and dance for the last 8 years. This new GM better change it.

Doesn't matter how many picks they get. They wont be able to come to terms with at least 2-3 of the top picks they make anyway.
