Well duh. You can't be brother and sister if you're from different races.

A Louisiana justice of the peace said he refused to issue a marriage license to an interracial couple out of concern for any children the couple might have. Keith Bardwell, justice of the peace in Tangipahoa Parish, says it is his experience that most interracial marriages do not last long.
With divorce rates being what they are, you'd think his objection would apply equally to same-race couples too, right?

No, he's just a racist prick who's trying to hide behind a SOMEBODY THINK OF THE CHILDREN!!!11 defense.

It is not so much a tiny minority anymore in most states. It looks like support has been gradually growing over time in every state except Utah.

Within a couple weeks the state of Maine may pull a California and remove equal marriage in that state, however the polls are tied. If this trend continues, the equal marriage supporters will be a majority in that state, and a few others in a couple years.

Hopefully for a while longer, considering Obama should have nothing to do with firing this judge.

Not sure if the point of the thread is to point out all the heinous stuff that happens in places like Louisiana or that he should be forced, but I'm just pointing out that I do believe it is his right to be a racist ahole even if he shouldn't be one.
Sadly, it is his right....which is why people have to go ask for a marriage license in the first place.

Just another example as to why the government should get the HELL out of the marriage business.

People should be able to marry whoever the hell they want.

I think it just shows that racism goes both ways down there. Unless you think it wasn't a racist remark.

Yep.

Like I said, getting the government the hell out of the marriage business would solve all of those problems.

Drawing a comparison between a person who is gay- an essential aspect of his or her nature- and somebody who "wants" to marry a sibling is a pretty huge stretch, a silly comparison and, to me, f_cking offensive.

I never drew the comparison that way. I'm just talking about all the different ways the government has screwed up the marriage business.

Who cares if you marry your sister? Your brother? It shouldn't be of concern to anyone.

Just like two gay people getting married shouldn't be of concern to anyone either.

I'm sure Obama could pull a string with the people who do.

Which would be a blatant abuse of power.

There are people in place to deal with this. Hopefully, at least. Obama has more important things to worry about.

The guy appears to be an employee of the state, so no, it is not his right to choose who he grants marriage licenses to.

It's the equivalent of a black guy working at the DMV and refusing to renew the driver's license of a white guy, because he thinks white guys are bad drivers. Is it his right to choose who he grants driver's licenses to?

Can he not object and claim religion the way doctors do, when they avoid giving out birth control scripts?

He can object and "claim religion", but do you think he should be allowed to? You can object to anything on the basis of your religion.

"My religion dictates that black men and white women can't get married, so I won't issue them a marriage certificate".

"My religion says we shouldn't eat meat on Friday, so I'll only be serving french fries on Friday, as long as they are cooked in canola oil".

"I can't work on Sundays. My religion says so, so you'll have to change the schedule and Keith will have to work".

"Sharlene doesn't cover her head, and that's against my religion, so I won't be working while she's in the office without her head covered."

Are those all acceptable? It's the same idea.

This cretin should be fired immediately. We don't have the right to refuse to do our job and keep it.

It's not his job to worry about the welfare of any potential kids because of their mixed ethnicity. The fact is, their marriage is perfectly legal in any state and he does not have the right to refuse to marry them - whether he is a racist or not. He should lose his job.

It really doesn't work that way. You have to be able to prove that by performing the action your religious values will be violated.

Otherwise I would have never written a test, gotten a speeding ticket or paid for my bar tab.
