Not so hard on your rims (not counting scratches, that's another story), but it can be hard on the tires themselves.

The other bonus is that you then have your winter tires on different rims, and you can mount them on the car yourself and save the $20+ per tire (and the usual rush of people). After one or two winters, you'll have paid for the extra rims just on change-over costs.

As far as the chemicals that are thrown down on the road by the sanding crews, they will all eat away at your rims. They may not corrode or rust, but that nice clearcoat finish will certainly not last.

The only way its hard on the tires is if the tire tech mounts them improperly and the bead tears. Most people dont own their cars long enough for corrosion to be an issue. I agree though saving on mounting costs will make steel wheels cheaper in the long term.

Plus, I find it a pain in the butt to always need to take it to a tire shop twice a year to get them mounted and balanced. Its usually just a half hour to an hour job at home to swap out the tires.

Luigi's Casa Della Tires. Buy one regular tire, he'll give you 7 snow tires for free.
