Bump.
I have a crap load of wasps in my backyard. Having a 4 year old that wants to use her swing set and I want to sit on the deck and enjoy a beer, this is a problem.

Here's the scenario:

At the beginning of the summer I put up one of those fake wasps nests. About 3 weeks ago I noticed a bunch of wasps on the back fence chewing away. Thought nothing of it. Couple of days later, I noticed they are chewing on the side fence (Our fences aren't treated... we were going to stain them this year)
A week after that, I noticed a bunch flying around a branch right beside the fake nest. Two days ago see a big swarm flying around a bush about 10 feet away from the tree. Took a closer look and found a nest.

Got the "Nest Killing" outfit on and whacked the crap out of the bush with a broom, destroying the nest. (I hope my neighbours weren't watching...) Put the fake nest beside where the real nest used to be.

Today they are still flying around the bush and the fences.

Is an exterminator going to be any help? The nest is gone. Or are they going to rebuild. Is there some kind of smell that would deter them? When I stain my fence, will that stop them from eating my fence?

I want my back yard back!

The wasps are really bad around Kelowna this summer. Stores are selling Wasp Traps.

^ I would love nothing more that to torch the motherfrackers, but I like the house I just moved into and I need the fences to separate my yard from the neighbours.

If its a hanging nest, you just use the spray at dusk/dawn and saturate it. Wait a day or two and take it down. For an in the ground nest you want that foaming spray.

They are attracted to your fence because its raw wood which they chew to make their paper nest. Seems like the fake nests arent working, I believe you're supposed to hang them somewhere visible so they think it's an occupied area. The wasp spray is the best, but you need to wait until the late evening when they're all inside of the nest. Whacking the old nest down with a broom simply dispersed them.

What you want to do is get a nest of these guys

They'll basically annihilate the Wasps nest and kill everything in it

Then once they've done that you want to get a couple of these

Then once they're done, you grab a family of

They'll completely eat those Spiders that killed the hornets that killed the wasp

Then you want to go out and buy

Give them a few days and then bring in

Upon that completion then you make one more call

I knocked the nest down. Then I sprayed all the larva with ant killer (the only thing I had on hand) and it's in my garbage now.

Are they going to rebuild?
and/or
Are they just hanging around for my nice, juicy and tender fence?

Al Pacino has the best solution to nests

NSFW!

I had to deal with 2 in Canmore this summer.

1 under the BBQ
1 under the roof edge of the house - about 20 feet away from the BBQ one.

One had yellow jackets, the other these big black mofos

The yellow jacket one I manned up and at night I just took a Sobeys bag to it when they were gone - wasnt overly large - maybe the size of 2 softballs.

The other was out of my reach so I got some spray, that stuff will rip the paint off concrete - wow did it work, that one had maybe 100 - about half the size of a football. We also bought a pack of that fake wasp net - forgot to read the fine print (dont allow it to get wet). Yah, it never rains in Alberta - damn BC company.

Yeah i have been in Sicamous most of August, and they are really bad here as well.

Those inverted 2 litre jugs are helping but the #######s are everywhere and likely hanging in trees i cant see anywhere i can get to, not to mention there are neighbors trees all around us as well.

They'll rebuild if the queen and workers are still around.

You can get fake wasp nests that encourage them to build somewhere else.

This clearly won't work in Peter's case, since they're nesting in the framing of a house...

But last year some wasps dug themselves a nice nest in a dirt pile I had my backyard (was doing landscaping). To get rid of them, I simply waited until nighttime, then armed myself with some WD-40, a BBQ lighter and a giant jug of water. I proceeded to spray a whack-load of WD-40 into their entrance in their sleep, leaving them unable to fly. Then I lit the hole up with the lighter which created a nice little ball of flame, and then put out the flame with the jug of water, thus drowning them as well.

It was glorious.

I've read in a number of places that those fake wasp nests aren't effective as wasps aren't all that territorial.

I've got a wasp nest in the roof of my well pump house but they don't seem to bother me. I bought some spray but never got around to using it. The problem is, it is right next to where I park my SUV and I found the buggers building a small nest in the top gap of the lift gate. I destroyed that nest a couple of times until they got the hint and than they built another one in the gap of my drivers door. I destroyed that one and now they've built a nest in my driver's side rear view mirror. Every time I go to town I find a couple of confused wasps circling my car, so I'm glad to leave them there. When I get home, a few wasps return to the nest in the rear view mirror, so I wait in the car until they settle down. The thing is they haven't attacked me so I haven't gone ape crap on them and I've heard they do some good to the environment.
