Based on the misery I saw last weekend in Confederation Park, don't forget to keep "mosquito season" in mind when deciding on your location if there's potential to do this thing outdoors.

My sister had hers at the Earl Grey Golf Course. It was incredibly nice. The ceremony was done on the grass near the club house. The reception followed in their banquet facility. In this springs bridal guide, there are a bunch of pictures of the setup. I'm sure your wife-to-be has or will have the bridal guide. Check that out for some nice venues

You were thinking of using the Red Deer Lake Community Hall. If you do, there used to be a local guy who did catering, in fact I think he still does a lot at Spruce Meadows and elsewhere. And I think he used to have an Artisan Bread shop in Chinook or close to it. Can't for the life of me remember his name. The RDL Community Association used him every year when they put on their spring fashion show for 250 guests. He always did a nice job. Perhaps Spruce Meadows might be able to give you the name.

I got married 2 weeks ago. We got married at the Newport Grill restaurant on Lake Bonavista. It was a very nice location and the food was amazing. We were able to have the ceremony and reception there
We just got back from our honeymoon at the Atlantis hotel in the Bahamas, and then in toronto we saw a few bluejays games. Too expensive in the Bahamas. I would suggest the bahamas, but do an all inclusive. The beaches there are amazing, and the people very friendly.

BUMP.
I was informed that it is my job to book a DJ for the wedding. I want a DJ who tries to make people have a good time. I have been to some wedding where the DJ just sits behind his mixer all night and doesn't interact at all. I have been to a few where the DJ will even be out there dancing at times, this is what I want (or it is what I have been told that I want...)
Suggestions or helpful tips would be welcome. Hell, if there are any wedding DJs here, fire me a PM and we can meet for beer and chat.

Pm'd
Funny you'd bring that up. That was my wedding job too. I of course procrastinated and managed to annoy my fiance to no end. One day she read me the riot act before I left for school and informed me that if I didn't have a dj by the weekend she was going to murder me.
So I'm sitting in my last class of the day when I remember that I was supposed to be looking for a dj. I turn to the guy I'm working on something with and say "oh damn, I forgot to look for a wedding dj today". He turns back and says "really? I'm a dj". Booked him on the spot.

A DJ can really make or break a wedding reception/party. A guy I worked with was a DJ for a company that I would rather have not hired... so I didn't. All I would hear from this guy every Monday though was how he did an awesome job DJ'd two or three events and really got the parties going. I just didn't trust his boss, so I didn't hire them.
Then, at my wedding (really, its your wife's wedding ), he proceeded to tell me every chance he could that he would've been doing it differently than the DJ that we hired. It really annoyed me and I didn't talk with him much after that. Fast forward a couple of years and guess who was the DJ for my sister-in-law's wedding? Guess who did a horrible job? His boss came to relieve him for a break and guess who was asked to keep doing the DJ services... yup, the boss.
Best thing to do when looking for a DJ is to remember DJs from previous weddings and to get recommendations.

Yeah. Seconded on Shawnski. He did my family reunion this summer, and then our ball tourney. He rocks.

Make sure your DJ doesn't attempt to cater to the old people by playing crappy songs like "Brown Eyed Girl" all night.
The key is to play some contemporary stuff, get the young uns out there and going, and once they are hammered up enough (shouldn't take long if they aren't already) they'll be dragging the grandmas out to dance to 50 cent and everyone will have a much better time.

The DJ who did my friends' wedding a couple months ago sucked. He was so over-the-top anal about not playing any pirated music that he wouldn't even play the clip show me and my buddy put together because he couldn't verify the sources for the three songs we had in it. F'n guy.
At the last minute, I had to burn back downtown to get my laptop, while another guy whipped over to his office to snake a projector. Then we plugged in some little portable ipod speakers into my laptop. Total disaster. Only the first couple of tables could hear the music, which was half the show (the way we put certain pics in at certain points in the songs).
I wish I bothered to get his name so I could be sure to NOT recommend him.
