Here's the song that prompted this thread. Grant Lee Buffalo. 'Demon Called Deception' from 1994. This is a youtube custom job so not sure what happens at the end but I think you can tell when the song ends and it goes into other junk. Anybody have any of their CDs?

I agree with you guys, I got into them when I was going through my classic rock phase many years ago. They are underrated.

As for stuff I've discovered lately I'll have to think about that a for a little bit, but I can remember times when a situation like this DID arise.

Like Nirvana. I would have been about 13 when they got big and at the right age to have swallowed them up. But I didn't even though so many of my peers liked them. I was never much into that teen angst thing (found the band a bit whiny, which only compounded my feelings when Cobain killed himself) and didn't really do things just because others did. I was pretty responsible for my age and stayed away from stuff like that, liking a lot of stuff that you might call contemporary (Like Genesis), a bunch of popular 80's music, and of course some of that cheesy dance music and rap that was out at the time.

As I got older I started to realize not only how important the band was to music history, but how misunderstood they were by older generations and how much they did have to say. Plus I was probably going through enough of the problems and feelings in my later teenage life and early adult life that made them more relevant. I ended up embracing them at a much later period, even though they kinda hit at the right time for me.

I recently looked up some Nick Cave to check it out again, after remembering something from my past.

If you like Cave, check out his old band Birthday Party. Very dark music about murder, death, drug addiction - all the good things in life...

Before they moved to England in 1980, the band called themselves Boys Next Door and this is a video from that era. Kind of funny, but not reminiscent of Birthday Party.

Weird, I was just listening to some old MP3s and one of my favorite punk songs ever, "Tin Soldier" by Stiff Little Fingers was one of them - they were a great band and I second the recommendation.

Dead Kennedys were another oldschool punk band that bears listening to, for those that like punk.

Just picked up the 2008 reissue of Nick Lowe's Jesus of Cool, which got me in the mood to start going back to other stuff released in the 70's like Wire. It's such a bonus to pile through my collection and rediscover stuff (and it saves me money as it keeps me from trying to find new things).

Jim Croce. I mentioned to my wife that my parents used to listen to him, so she bought me his greatest hits for my birthday. Good memories.

Laugh if you must: The Poppy Family and Terry Jacks as a solo artist. The music was much before my time, but my dad would constantly play their records. Their songs will always remind me of my dad.

I love Jim Croce, he was an incredibly talented man. The one artist that my dad introduced me to that I actually enjoy.

I love them. Saw them at the Empire Stadium in 78 or 79 Breakfast in America.

as of tonight, I now am on a quest to re-discover 2 older bands; The Police, and Dire Straits.

watching a documentary on rock bands, and they were playing some of this stuff, and maybe because of my newfound appreciation of more technical drumming, guitar and arrangements I found myself listening to the Police stuff with a much more appreciative ear than I did when it first came out.

I have recently discovered the nine-string guitar playing brilliance of Big Joe Williams:

I just re-discovered "Bob Segers Greatest Hits" CD in my collection.

That guitar solo from "Like a Rock" makes my spine tingle....

That and the opening Piano on "Roll Me Away" are just simple but awesome.....

Peter Green has incredible skills (I wonder if he was in Fleetwood Mac?)

The Flying Burrito Brothers have a cool country-rock sound with slide guitar that I'm digging.

I second the Allman Brothers (gimme 3 steps, mister<or was that Skynyrd?>) and the Grateful Dead...Oh, and the Highwaymen!
