I think as with the douching girl being the happiest the rePHresh commercial, the lack of a vagina makes us guys not understand this completely, because most girls that I know go nuts over this guy.

Triumph was the only "real" rock and roll band that was there last night. Its kinda a shame that young people are growing up in an area where bands like Nickleback can construed as great rock bands. Its flavour of the week, emo, latte inspired music that dominates the industry now, where as some of the best acts are limited to playing seedy bars and indie festivals.

The talent of musicians has declined progressively since the video era came in since appearance > than musical talnent in the eyes of music producers and record labels nowadays. Today bands like Rush, Triumph, Rolling Stones even monsters like KISS and Iron Maiden would have no chance because of their visual handicaps, even though (with the exception of KISS) any one guy, from any of those bands has more musical talent in one of his turds than most these new era rock bands have in their en-tire line-up. And I am not talking from a state of opinion, I do play a guitar and Bass. Learning solos from 70's and especially 80's metal (been working on the solo from metallica's Am I Evil for 2 years!!) can take months to master, where you can master entire modern rock songs in matter hours.

You have to be old like me to know who Triumph is.

You kids out there don't know who Triumph is? Wow, I'm old. I remember wishing I had gone to the '83 US Festival because they stole the show.

I'm not even that old and I know who Triumph is... but then they cut their own career short. Perhaps it helps that I'm the youngest of 4 children so really, I know who they are by virtue of my siblings.

I went to the show and had great seats. I was wondering how much I would enjoy it in some ways as some of the bands playing are really not my thing. Honestly it was phenomenal and I will definitely attend again. The only bad performance was Avril who looked like she could hardly wait to get out of there!

Finger Eleven was great and so was Jully Black. I can't stand Hedley, but they did perform well. Feist was probably the best performance of the night, but really there were a lot of cool things to see there!

Triumph is classic. Rik Emmett is the man...

They were a required listening in the '80s headbanger village that reared me.

If it was not for those iPod commercials, Fiest would be a nobody.

How did she get those commercials in the first place?

I have to admit, last night was a joke, but I love Feist. She's a great performer, extremely talented and not all up on herself like a lot of those untalented jokers (see: Hedley).

Feist is a talented performer. She's a bit of an eccentric, I suppose. Her music is not for everyone.

This day and age we usually only like what radio stations tell us to like (with the notable exception of troutman and a small number of others). Canada was confused by the iPod commercial and her appearances on SNL. We were told we were supposed to like her and that her stuff was poppy and catchy, at least as much as Anne Murray's latest. On top of all that, she was a Calgarian and we should all embrace her for that. Who doesn't love a home town hero returning to whence she came after conquering the world? Then when Feist took the stage in front of thousands of diehard fans cheering her on at the Dome and the legions more at home she betrayed them all by playing something that 95% of Feist "fans" had never heard before: a song other than "1 2 3 4".

Oh yeah, she was making some noise and Apple certainly helped her along. But my point is the same as yours, she's an actual musician/artist with real song-writing talent.

I agree with some of the posters here... the whole "E-Hollywood Canada" thing done outside the Saddledome, by reporters from Toronto, was embarassing.
The performances with some exceptions were pretty lacking, as well.

Namely, I dislike the whole thing for the same reasons I dislike most award shows. They celebrate sales and hype instead of talent.

I don't own a Michael Buble record. I don't think I've ever actually heard any of his songs outside of awards shows. But between his appearance on "Las Vegas" (Buble Buble Buble) and his Fans' Choice acceptance speech last night, I think I'm a fan. His music really isn't my cup of tea but he's won me over as a performer with his personality and his talent. Perhaps I'm not alone in my new-found crush on Michael Buble?

Out of curiosity, under which category (sales or hype) would you place the following artists showcased on last night's show:

Measha Brueggergosman
Feist
Anne Murray
Belly
Wintersleep
Michael Buble

Hey, I'm not saying that I disliked all of the artists. One of my favourite bands ever, the Sadies, was up for Roots/Traditional album of the year.

However, the general flavour is as I described.

I may be waaaay out of the loop, but do you guys actually like that Michael Buble guy? They were marketing him like some super popular pop artist who everyone should know and love, but honestly, I don't know anyone who actually listens to him. How'd he win the Fans Choice award?
Hooold on charlie. Michael Buble is awesome...Did you see his acceptance speech? The guy's a great natural talent. As we speak his album is the #1 Jazz album on the Billboard chart, #25 in UK music sales, and #33 in Canada....And he's been on the charts for 25-30 weeks already with his latest album. I understand his music is not for everyone, but he's a greater talent than a lot of the hacks out there making a name for themselves with catchy jingles running on 4 minute loops.

"This just seemed to be a popularity contest for whoever is currently hot in music."

In an annual awards show? Who'da thunk it?

Here is a list of the winners from last night's broadcast:
  • Album of the Year: The Reminder by Feist
  • Country Recording of the Year: Risk by Paul Brandt
  • Juno Fan Choice Award: Michael Bublé
  • Group of the Year: Blue Rodeo
  • New Group of the Year: Wintersleep
  • Pop Album of the Year: The Reminder by Feist
  • Single of the Year: "1234" by Feist
Here is a list of the artists who performed on last night's broadcast:
I'll spot you Hedley, Finger Eleven and Avril Lavigne but of all the rest of the acts listed, which would you say are bereft of talent and only celebrated because of hype and record sales?
