Tough on crime laws. YES!!!!

Harper is doing a good job, and that is going to make it tough for the Libs to win an election. All of the above along with trying to reform the Senate are all things that make sense! The only thing that Harper has screwed up on is Income Trusts.

I wonder if they smell blood and are going to try and get the majority they deserve.
I'd rather have higher GST and less personal/business taxes. This promotes better spending habits and rewards those who invest over those who spend frivolously.

I totally agree. I could care less about another 1% reduction on the GST. This is nothing more than trying to buy votes IMO.

Not sure if anyone is watching the throne debate, but Harper is right now responding to Dion's throne speech reaction. Dion said the Grits would support the throne speech, which means there will be no election.

Harpers speech is very passionate, and much better put together than Dion's. No doubt in my mind he's the best option to lead this country right now.

Anyone can watch it from cpac.ca, as long as their company doesn't block it like mine does...

I heard a sound bite as I ran out to get a bite to eat... Didn't Dion say something like (paraphrasing) "as bad as the content of the throne speech was, it would have been worse if they had a majority"?

Nothing like admitting they would lose in an election, but hoping to limit to a minority.

Harper is stuck right now. He wants an election, but he can't get one. He didn't put a "poison pill" in the throne speech because this would make him unelectable to most people.

Its a double-edged sword. I'm glad though....who wants to see another federal election? Not me.

I am VERY unhappy that the throne speech has promised to strengthen copyright in Canada. There are strong rumours of a Canadian version of the DMCA.

Digital Millenium Copyright Act. In the US it is the thing that makes it illegal to sell or create any technology that can be used to bypass copyright features. It is what Lexmark used to sue replacement inject cartridge makers, arguing the chip Lexmark added to their cartridges were Intellectual Property and replacement cartridge manufacturers were violating their copyright by adding the chip.
In general it was a knee-jerk reaction to Napster and provided copyright holders with extensive rights and powers that they had never had before. It has resulted in security analysts being jailed for revealing the results of their work, video game mod-chips being declared illegal, and a spate of companies adding technological features to products to lock out competitors.

A lot of lawyers have made a lot of money. A lot of court time has been tied up. A lot of potential innovation has been stifled. A lot of research has been shelved. And all at the expense of consumer rights, for the benefit of the entertainment industry, in the name of the DMCA.

^ Thanks! I figured it was something along those lines, but wasn't too sure!

He's not at all stuck. Right now he's saying either vote with us or bring us down. There will be another confidence vote within the week. The con's want an election.

The Conservative strategy after today is to bring up all the distastful legislation that the Liberals don't want to support and ram them through the house, practically forcing a confidence vote on each one.

The problem for the Conservatives is the liberal dominated senate that spent the last session stopping and slowing down every piece of non liberal friendly legislation that they can.

The senate has become an unelected political weapon that serves its master well

Given that the conservatives just can't pull away in the polls, I wouldn't be so sure that Harper wants an election right now (though the latest poll posted on nodice.ca has the Cons with a 40-28 lead in the polls, but that one is out there). With the Liberals so messed up right now, Harper can put things like Kyoto into a confidence bill, and force the Liberals to support him because they don't want an election right now.

Harper is manipulating his opponents weakness, and doing a good job of it too.
