Looks cool, but why Cingular. They have got to be the worst of all cellular providers.

I see it is a multi-year exclusive deal with cingular through 2009. What a brutal mistake that is. Cingular is the joke of cell carriers in the US. A cool phone/ipod thing is neat and all, but if your phone coverage sucks, who cares how cool the advice is.
This device has no chance for that fact alone.

Because it's a GSM phone, so in the US the only real provider to go with is Cingular... so being exclusive doesn't really mean much.
It means they'll sell far more phones worldwide.. the world is used to good phones though while the US is a backwater
The US is only one market.

Phone looks quite impressive, but I do agree the fact that someone probably WILL comeout with something almost exactly like this sooner or later. So far, the rival of Apple with the iPOD products is Creative... and this feeling tells me Creative won't be able to match the iPhone with anything this time. Microsoft maybe, who knows?
But this definitely looks great, however, I will DEFINITELY wait for a price drop before I buy one.

That is what my first thought was too.... Anyone at Rogers know what the plan is?
I hate how we get screwed in Canada when it comes to any electronic device of almost any nature.
What are the storage capacities of the two versions? I looked through the iPhone's site but didnt see it mentioned.

They could have made it for whatever phone system they wanted.
I believe the US is the only place where Ipods dominate the music player market, so really it is the place that will make or break the Iphone, you'd figure.

Steve Jobs would fly to Toronto in his Gulfstream and personally pound Ted Roger's eyes shut if they limited anything on his baby.

I don't know about that. I take public transit to work everyday and can't go without seeing at least a dozen people with the white Ipod headphones. The Ipod dominance is up here too.

Well they could have but getting a phone onto a non-GSM network is a lot more involved; possibly they just couldn't come up with the necessary system and agreements in time.
Plus in the other markets where the iPod has a big share of the market (Europe and Japan) GSM is the way to go.
And in those other markets where the iPod isn't that big a seller, maybe they see this as a way to get into those markets?

I have one of the first 2nd generation iPods and it's suffered through so many dings and drops it ain't funny. I'm surprised that it's survived this long. I've been meaning to upgrade to something with a bigger colour screen with video capability for some time, but when I heard that an iPhone was coming I put off upgrading for a year because I needed a cell phone as well.
I don't care if this thing costs double that price, I knew I was getting one.
The Apple haters weren't going to consider buying one anyhow... they just troll these threads for entertainment purposes; not to actually add to the discussion. So I shall ignore them.
I will say that I am very disappointed with the storage. I was hoping to REPLACE my current iPod which carries 40Gig of which I have filled half. So if I wanted to add videos and movies and ****... blah. I mean, great, it's half an inch thick, but so what? My current iPod is 3/4 of an inch and I don't find it bulky. I would have much rathered a 1 inch thick iPhone that can carry 60Gig. But that ain't enough to stop me...
*sigh* Looks like I may be waiting another year. They will be launched in the U.S. in June and then late 2007 for Europe. No mention whatsoever of Canada. It may be like iTunes where it takes 15 billion years for them to finally get around to us.

I read somewhere that Cingular had 58 million customers. Apple just picked the provider with the biggest market share.
Slightly off-topic: Is Zune even being sold anywhere?

That's a HUGE consideration. Most everyone has some sort of anti-scratch device on their iPod. Multi Touch might work like a dream with a naked screen, but slap a Screen Protector on there and you might as well be wearing ski gloves. We shall see.

This phone looks like it is geared more towards kids. On the link I didn't see anything about it being able to create or edit spreadsheets or documents. What kind of task manager does it have? The MP3 player is good, surfing the net is good, but it needs to have more functions than that. Unless it is just for entertainment purposes. Am I missing the work side of this phone?

Yep, not much use for iTunes, cameras, PhotoDisplay in a corporate setting. Not that the iPhone is targetted at corporate users anyways. I don't think Apple cares about the Fortune 500 companies as a target market anyways, for either their Mac or iPhone lines. RIM rules the roost there really, along with various WinCE devices.
I'm intrigued by this push IMAP the iPhone offers. Hopefully it pressures RIM into introducing true IMAP abilities in OS 4.2. It sucks right now having 1 way reconciliation with IMAP accounts...

You can use all those functions in a corporate setting. Lots of business travel, waiting in airports, waiting at the rental car place. Its nice to have a device that is work and play. I'm not bragging up my current device. But I would be dead without it at work, yet I listen to tunes on it at the gym and play texas holdem with it when I am bored or waiting in line. I would like to see if this iPhone has a working side.

Well of course ANYONE can use these features, it's a matter of spending corporate money on toys for it's employees. If you're a director of IT, why spend $599 per head when you'd get core functionality by only spending $100 for a Blackberry?
Not to mention many companies are restricting camera phones in the workplace too.

The buzz is around my office this am about this phone here in cell phone jacked Tokyo even. Smart, smart move by Apple to bust this in the mobile hicktown USA. I think they'll wind up dominating the market stateside, eventually.
