If you want a radio station that really plays different music, go to http://www.freq107.com/
At the page, choose "playlists" and see every song they've played this week. It's a pretty decent station.

CANCON, the dreaded word. One reason why I too am an ipod or satellite radio(us version) subscriber. Nothing dissapoints me more than having to listen to some crap Canadian artist or band which is played only to ensure the percent requirements are met on radio.

I don't have a problem listening to Canadian bands. There are lots of bands I've heard in bars that are better than bands on the radio and just never go signed for whatever reasons. My biggest beef with Cancon is that only a select few artists get their stuff played over and over and over. The repetition drives me nuts. Theres lots of great Canadian music that never makes the airwaves; play some of that instead Photograph by Nickelback for the 4th time in the last 3 hours.

CANCON isn't a bad word when it involves the Hip or OLP IMO... it's when it involves Trooper or Chillawack... then it's a 4 letter word.

Trooper and Chilliwack, although kinda lame, are still of higher status than OLP.
Can you listen to satellite radio in the middle of an office tower?

Yup, that's what's killing Canadian Radio. It was orginally designed for young emerging Canadian acts to get exposure, but it's just an excuse to hear all the mainstream Canadian bands ever two seconds.
You know that it's pretty bad when OLP (and other bands for that matter) are saying that the system is broken and they themselves are sick of hearing their own songs on the radio due to CANCON.
They really ought fix this.

So Cjay is finally getting a format change? About time, how long has that dinosaur been on the airwaves?

Cjay won't change because they have the highest ratings for a rock station in Canada for the last decade. Cjay is 92.1.
The new station is a NEW STATION, hence the 92.9. They are an alternative station that plays more Radiohead etc that CJAY won't touch.

That has got to be 100% bull****. Every station out there claims to have the best ratings ever!! God that crap station makes me ill, those programmers are the biggest whores on the planet.
And if that claim is true, then Calgary has a lot more mouth breathing rejects than I thought.

Second most listened to station in Calgary, behind Country 105: http://www.mediaincanada.com/article...1004/bray.html
More than 1 out of every 5 men between the ages of 25 and 54 listen to CJAY. That's a lot of mouth-breathing rejects.

Believe it! CJAY is a very successful. Keep in mind they are also the only major market rock station in Canada that get's nearly 100% of the rock pie. They are virtually unchallanged. Rock107 tanked after a year or so, Rock97 tanked after a year or so and Q107 will do the same in time. CJAY has a huge strangle hold on Calgary's rock audience. Hopefully this new station will force them to do better.

I guess we'll find out what happens with the new station. Either it'll steal away some of CJAY's audience, or these people will stick with Cjay and prove that they are in fact mouth-breathing rejects.

I used to listen to CJAY92 until Jack FM started up. The DJ shtick on CJAY was getting really annoying (yes, I know you guys are hardcores because you drink on every shift...yawn) and Jack FM was offering some 80's cheese and some rock music. I had been listening to CJAY for years because it was the only rock station in town. Now, Jack FM has really gotten on my nerves with their really unfunny morning show. Hopefully, one of the new radio stations coming to town will give me a good rock outlet that doesn't annoy the hell out of me.
