It's now flooded, both the rink and the kiddy part beside. The ice looks not too bad, to boot.
|
Yeah, I've been scoping it out since last weekend, just got back from my first skate over there (South Calgary). Looks like it got a lot of use today, some big cracks developing, a couple more floods and it'll be fine.

The rink on 29th street by Mount Royal college has been completely revamped with new boards similar to an NHL rink (i.e. not wood) and chain link fence. I went there today for a skate and it was pretty good except for there were no nets out yet which was a little disappointing. I think last year they got brand new nets as well so just waiting on those to be brought out.

I was there last night as well. Those cracks are almost fully developed but they've got nothing on the holes. The cracks will just break your leg but them holes can break your neck.
Does anyone know if you can volunteer to help look after that rink?

I live in Stanley Park, I havent seen anything resembling a rink nearby. I usually play at Wildwood, but there is always a mass of people there. Anyone know of a rink nearby.

I showed up at Midnight and talked to the guy for a bit, he was spraying the kiddie rink with the sprinkler. He said he would flood the rink later that night by hand, I asked him if he needed any help. He said not right then but show up during the week, I'm guessing he just needs a hand removing snow.

For some of you that live near the way up North. The rink up in Hidden Valley was nicely flooded, and they have the hockey nets there as well. Played some shinny with a few people that were there earlier in the afternoon. The ice wasn't too bad, but it's suppose to be fairly warm this week so we'll see what happens to the ice then.

You know what I've forgotten to mention?
We have shinny here at the University every Tue & Thu from 12PM to 1PM. Just walk into the Oval, tell them you're there to play shinny, go downstairs and pay $4~ at the skate shop.
Next time is Thu of course, but after that they shut down until January.

I just finished playing at Murray Copot Arena (6715 Centre St. N.W.) and we had two goalies and only three guys. So if anyone wants to start a tuesday lunch ritual (12:00pm - 1:30pm) then head down. Lunch shinny at the city is $5.25. Sometimes we play there on Friday at lunch too.

There is a few rinks in the sw which we play at now and again. Woodlands is so so ice but has lots of people, cedarbrae and braeside are not flooded and Oakridge is not too bad for a little shinny.

Ya wildwood's zambo has been sitting outside for a week straight now.....right through all that really cold weather. I really dont understand why they would leave it outside 2 feet from the Zambo Garage.

Does anyone live in the Banff Trail/Capitol Hill area? Has anyone used the rink by the Banff trail community centre (20th by 20th NW)? Are there nets in place? Good ice?

What's up with that? Jeeeez, that makes me crazy. I noticed they finally flooded a small rink (no boards) this weekend on 16th street SW and ohhhh 40th ave or so. I thought I'd take my kids out to enjoy some nice fresh ice, but when I showed up there were four young hooligans jumping on and smashing rocks all over the ice. When challenged, they just shrugged and, as I drove away, continued &^(%ing up the ice with renewed zeal. Idiots.

What are the helmet policies at most of the rinks in Calgary? Tried to go to a place yesterday, got the skates laced up, and then got told we can't play because we didn't have helmets. So we went to about 5 other rinks, none were open. We finally found an open one, only to hear it had a mandatory helmet policy as well. This place let us play for one night with no helmet, which was nice.

I've been to Signal Hill, and went early in the morning... only a few people out, no helmet required... I think... well, no rink rats were there though...
