"We all have to improve the civility that occurs in public life and in the House of Commons in particular because we want to attract good people to participate in public life. We want to attract many more women to participate in politics.
"We only have about 20 per cent now. I talk to many women across the country and they say 'You know what, I don't know that I really want to participate if it's going to be so rough and nasty.' "

And a Roast is "a facetious ceremonial tribute, usually concluding a banquet, in which the guest of honor is both praised and good-naturedly insulted in a succession of speeches by friends and acquaintances." (definition 17)

I didn't realize she was being honoured.

I've seen a few roasts, and it it the guest of honour who is roasted, and sometimes he responds to the people who roasted him. This was a cheapshot, plain and simple. A funny cheapshot (the best I've heard in a while), but a cheapshot none the less.

Thanks Bobblehead. All the reports I've heard so far said that her office had no comment. Off course now I just see her comments on Global TV.

As for the definition of a roast- I agree that is what I used to think. But after seeing them on Comedy Central I see all sorts of off comments like that, for people there and others.

Ok so it's agreed that this was a funny joke. Case settled.

Nothing wrong with the joke at all. Typically the responses are towards the roasters but they need not be. Everything is pretty much fair game during a roast. And really it's a nothing story...Klein is a provincial politician on his way to retirement while Stronach is a federal MP based in Ontario.
It may be a story if this was some old MP on parliament hill that was retiring where he is making the joke about a colleague (as all MPs are no matter the party affiliation) but it isn't.

The only story here is that Ralph told a good joke.

I think that what troubles me most about this, is that, in what is clearly a joke directed at a political nemesis of the conservatives, that left-wing femenists everywhere are pointing at this as an example of how women are oppressed in politics. And the same left wingers claim it will hurt conservative party in Calgary.

To be honest, I think that this was a rather tame comment in the context of politics. If this puts Belinda Stronach (BS) off of her game, then perhaps she hasn't got the backbone for politics (and I don't think that this would bother her as much as give her political ammunition - in much the same way, as I don't believe that anyone in the Liberal party was offended by the dog comment - they were looking for political points).

lol, I doubt that there is any sympathy for Stronach amongst Conservatives in Calgary, so that suggestion is laughable, but typical of left wing politics.

The funny thing about this is that Stronach is where she is specifically because she is a woman. If she was a guy, she would have been nothing more than another back bencher. She was brought into be the star for the Conservatives specifically because she is a woman. I wonder why she, feminists or anyone else had no complaints then? It is all kinds of hypocritical for her to whine about how this will affect other women getting into politics. If you make your gender the central factor of your qualifications for election, then suck it up when that is what also gets mocked.

I might make an exception for you, Tron... I have a feeling you know how to fish.

I think it was a funny joke but it was inappropriate. When the "roastee" is speaking, the jokes usually are either self-deprecating or are directed at the people who roasted him. I am not a huge fan of Stronach...I find her wooden (no pun intended), overly ambitious and lacking principles but I have trouble with attacking someone who is not even at the function.

I find it a tad rich that a former Liberal (who ran for the leadership of the Tories shortly after leaving the Libs) would criticize anybody for switching parties for political gain.
