I don't know what would warrent a nod for an oscar for him. Perhaps miricle, other than that he's done mostly action and romantic comedy. Don't ge me wrong, love him he's Jack Burton afterall!

Well, I thought Miracle, maybe even Backdraft. But I was referring more to the fact that he is a good actor in general, just hasn't found the right role, the role that could garner him a nomination.
And yes, Jack Burton. "If we're not back by dawn, call the president."

Glad to see someone mention him. He's an underrated actor because the media has made him into a sex symbol. I'm a fan of Brad Pitt actually. A River Runs Through It is another great film and part of his. He was frigging brilliant in 12 Monkeys.

Here here. What a BEAUTIFUL film. And his performance was far and away the best in the movie.

There are many talented people, not only Actors, who have deserved the Oscar more than others but have never won. IMO the Oscar's is the epitome of the popularity contest and often the people that win are the one's that are most liked. There have been exceptions but too few IMO.
This isn't a recent issue, the Academy has a history of not awarding the most deserving. Orson Welles IMO is perhaps the best example of this. In 1941 Citizen Kane was booed at the Oscars, now this movie is the AFI's best movie of all time.

as much as i dislike awards shows, and feel the oscars especially are nothing more than vehicles for a select star's next paycheque ;there is one actor who is just as gritty and intense as penn, deniro or pacino has ever been. that Gary Oldman has been overlooked for even a measley nomination is a farce.

Good call on Gary Oldman. Great great actor who should have at least been nominated by now. Talk about underrated.
Lot's of good choices. I've always liked Alan Rickman. He can play different roles than the over the top bad guy. (However, his roles in Die Hard and Robin Hood were darn good anyway.) Brad Pitt was superb in 12 Monkeys and is a much better actor than some people give him credit for.

Put me down for all the named above. Those are some great actors there and Alan Rickman's role in Robin Hood makes that movie worth watching not to mention his role as the overly-depressed robot Marvin in The Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy, which granted isn't an award worthy movie but was very entertaining none the less. Brad Pitt has defenitely been under-rated for talent and has been picked for roles more for his box office draw, I can't wait to see what he does in The Assasination of Jesse James. Both Gary Oldman and Daniel Day Lewis are fantastic actors who have always been overlooked as well as Ethan Hawke.

Gary Oldman hands down.
Why?
Because he plays such a variety of characters you hardly know who he is. Most people probably don't recognize him when they meet him in real life.
Sid in "Sid and Nancy"
Dracula in "Bram Stoker's Dracula"
Zorg (the bad guy) in "5th Element"
Gordon in "Batman Begins".
This guy has serious range.
DOH! Somebody already said him. Well, add me to the list.

That Martin Scorsese has been shut-out for so long makes the Academy Awards a complete joke.
Raging Bull has to be one of the top 5 American movies EVER and represents Scorsese at his absolute top-form... but that year the sexy pick was Hollywood golden boy Redford.
Happened again in '91 with Costner beating his work on Goodfellas, his second best movie (and also in the top 5 IMO).
I don't doubt he will win eventually... Possibley next year for his new film "The Departed".. But its a shame that when he does win, it will likely be for a film that doesn't even come close to the level of either Raging Bull or Goodfellas as a "well we need to give him one.. might as well be now" gesture.
I'm actually surprised they didn't do that for either the Aviator or Gangs of New York as both were in particularily weak years.
I hate the Oscars. The only awards anyone ever goes out on a limb and make ballsy picks for are the screenplay ones and occasionally the supporting actor categories.

Not to mention the seriously psycho dude he played in Leon or The Professional, depending on the country you're in. Stansfield was his name in that.

My guess is that the Academy will never give Scorcesse an award for directing but they will eventually give a Life Time Achievement Award, which he would defenitely deserve.

Gary Oldman was always one of my favourites the guy is better than "Hugo master of 1000 faces." Unfortunately, I also had Johnny Depp on my list as did everyone else. It took me about a decade to get over his 21 jump street appearances but once I gave up my personal bias I realised this guys good. But I can strike off the Man at the top of my list Phillip Seymour Hoffman. Man he was the creepiest MF ever in both Talented Mr.Ripley and Boogie Nights. And funny and likeable in Love Actually and The Big Lebowski.
And Luke Perry is also overlooked!

My favorite roll of Oldman's was in State of Grace, very under-rated but powerful film.

Me too,

Oh and P.S. Hoffman was in 3 of those movies. I don't know why I typed love Actually. I think I may have had Punch Drunk Love on the mind.
