The Flames are so insistent on giving themselves a chance to be middle of the road that we have so many mediocre veterans on the roster we can't find space to play guys like Zary in the right positions.

Last season, the Flames were 0-2 in Vegas and did not score a goal in either game.
The previous 2 seasons, they went 1-0-1 in Vegas each season. Prior to that, they lost all 7 games they played down there.
They have been shutout 5 of 13 games played in Vegas. They have been outscored 50 to 25 in 13 total games. 28% of their goals came in one game where they scored 7 goals.

If Zary can't work his way up the lineup past mediocre veterans, that's on him, no?
You have this preconceived notion that the Flames are committed to a path of trying to make the playoffs, and it colours everything you see - nothing but confirmation bias.
I don't think the Flames are as foolish as you seem to think they are.

Zary's underlying numbers through five games this year have been brutal. Getting killed at evens and hardly taking any shots, or even attempting them. He's got to be a whole lot better.

I agree.
Wasn't Zary playing with Kadri and Coronato/Sharangovich last game? So if Zary is playing well, or another forward isn't going, then he gets bumped up the lineup.
Moreover, Zary started the season in a position to succeed on the Backlund line, but Honzek looked better in that role. I still think Zary ends up as a staple on either the Frost or the Kadri line by the end of November.

That game was more or less lost on the terrible defensive play of Miromanov against Eichel.

Looks, Zary is a young mediocre 24 year old player. He is getting blocked by a better mediocre 26 year old player and a better mediocre 25 year old player. Clearly there is an anti prospect bias in the organization.

CC was right to be cautious with him. Zary has not proven anything at the NHL level yet. He’s off to a bad start this year.
Right now I lump him with all the mid players.

I think they’re kind of fun. Talking about your own bets and expecting anyone to care is kind of lame.

Well look who his line mates are. Not like he is being sent up for success at all. Great lineup management so far, grade A.

I’m curious how he compares to Sharangovich when playing with similar linemates.

Yup, I'll be there, first time at this arena. The Flames' history there doesn't lead one to actually want to go very badly.

He was one of the best players on the roster until he got hurt last year. After the additions of Farabee and Frost he couldn't find a steady place on the roster. He has played well with the opportunities he has been given.
As for the confirmation bias, give me a break. Every market outside Calgary sees the same thing. Conroy thinks the Flames are better then they are because the team was disguised by great goaltending. The Flames have NEVER been open for business, with the word being we weren't interested in selling veterans outside of Andersson. There is plenty of bias on the board, but its not from those frustrated by the Flames lack or committment to a rebuild.

I don’t know man, when this team is really good again in a few years I think Zary will still be down the lineup. I think eventually he learns to be an NHLer and tops out at a Stajan type player.
His fancy stuff doesn’t work and the success he has is when he simplifies and goes to the net. I think that’s why coach plays him down the lineup. The East West futility. Huska really hates that.
No one on this team is Johnny. Not even close. And Johnny didn’t take long to learn back checking and stealing pucks with his skill. To my untrained eye Zary wants to play that style but lacks the skill.
