Are the Ducks and Kraken going with 3 goalies to start the season?
Ducks still have Dostal, Mrazek and Husso
Kraken still have Daccord, Murray and Grubauer

So, I guess the strat would be to paper Gridin to the AHL, pick up one of the goalies and then waive Cooley?
Or perhaps having a backup in the 0.800s is a tanking strat?

Dipietro looks like a nice risk/reward to take on waivers.

Based on their play there should be next to no attachment to Cooley or Prosvetov. Waive them, demote them to the ECHL, whatever. Not in the long term plans and shouldn't be in this year's plans if the goal is playoffs.
Tank commanders may disagree.

Sogaard’s numbers in the AHL and his few games in the NHL have been awful. He needs a fresh start and a lot of work to rebuild his game, but he isn’t a fit as the backup here right now.
DiPietro and Daws are the guys I would take a look at. DiPietro is a smaller goalie with good athleticism, Daws is a bigger goalie in a similar style to Vladar.

Could get tricky if your preferred guy is claimed before your spot but you have a 2nd or 3rd choice

Cayden Primeau is another goalie I would take a look at. Really good AHL numbers, NHL numbers not as good, but Montreal has been pretty bad defensively for a long time.

I bet they do nothing and stick to Cooley purely out of loyalty. I hope I'm wrong, but is there any evidence the Flames are even in the market for a new backup?

They went out and signed one out of the KHL like 2 months ago

I still think that Samsonov is better than any of the waiver goalies available.

I'm curious how that works. I wonder if the Flames could say: "We will put in claims on Daws, DiPietro, Kahkonen, or Sogaard in that order. If our preferred player is available at our waiver priority, we'll take him and revoke our claim on the rest. If we get one of the four, we'll also place Cooley on waivers. If none of the four are available, we will not put Cooley on waivers."?

What has he been up to though...and if the Flames were interested they would have done something sooner I think

Yeah, so would I but I'll be honest it's based more in draft pedigree and liking him around the draft than anything now. We have nothing for a back up though.

Weird to assume we'd stick with three goalies.

So, the order is from last place and up, right? Guess it comes down to which ones the Flames can see putting in a claim to shore up sketchy backup situation to decide who they feel they can most likely get.

Wonder if him being the lone player in the Hanifin deal has something to do with keeping him. What i mean is to not have that trade look bad by giving him another shot to hopefully have become a decent Defenseman on the team?

His agent was saying he's only looking for work in the NHL to start the summer, but lately changed his tune slightly so the KHL is not out of the picture. The problem with a KHL signing is that Metallurg Magnitogorsk still have his rights, and aren't in a hurry to trade them to teams that might be interested in signing him.
There are rumors in Russian media that NHL teams are weary of signing him because of the way he acts off the ice.

It upsets me. NHL club representatives call me and ask for a reference. My experience working with Ilya has been very good. But they have their own perspective, their own information. If you look at his hockey performance — for example, his win-loss percentage — he's among the top. If you compare the stats of other goalies on those teams, Ilya's numbers are often better. Has he fully realized his potential? I would say no. I believe he’s drawing conclusions. With the right attitude, Ilya should improve. Is his off-ice behavior letting him down? Judging by what team representatives are saying, that's exactly what concerns them.
