Actually, the game hasn't changed as much as you think. Fans have been making this exact same complaint for at least the last 45 years, since the Flames came to town – always bitching because they think a rookie can just pop in and do better than a vet. I suspect every single coach in the NHL has been called an idiot for ‘leaning on the dinosaurs’.
When the season is on the line, every coach will prefer the players who know the system forwards and backwards and are familiar with all their teammates. No coach will just kick out a vet to throw in a teenaged rookie before he even gets a practice with the team.
