Well if the Oilers lose all their remaining games, the only team that could knock them out is the Flames.

Weegar and Andersson have blocked over 160 shots each.
They also play a difficult style of hockey that is hard to maintain for a full 82 games, so the wear and tear is likely playing a part in starting slow. It's not sustainable to play this way, especially the shot blocking and getting in lanes. It's also the only way this team can win with the lack of skill in the lineup.

If the Oilers do that, it would have to be with us making it as Vancouver doesn't hold the tiebreak with them, so they can't catch them even if they win out and Edmonton loses out.

Dream scenario for sure!

Side note, I wonder how the players feel over the course of the year hearing the coaching staff say things like "this is the way we have to play to have success" and indirectly hearing there is a lack of skill on the team.
It very well may be true (though more true re: skill at the start of the year then now IMO) but it would still piss me off.

Basically the coaching staff saying you kind of suck lol

Lol. Pretty harsh take for a team that is still in the race due solely to sheer willpower, character and determination.

They have to get up for every. single. game. because they don't have the talent to coast by on talent alone. On paper this is one of the least talented rosters in the league and they're fighting for a playoff spot in game 78.

I don't begrudge them being tired as hell.

The other thing is 12 in a row, and the last few with come from behind or overtime wins, it's not that uncommon to see a team hit the wall hard. it's conceivable that the Blues just struggle to close out the season, I think just with 2 games left against the Sharks the Oilers remain the least catchable team.
Quality of Competition remaining after tonight

 Van 548
 Cgy 548
 Min 532
 Stl 503
 Edm 496

It's sad to say about the oilers, but if we somehow see Edmonton, Calgary and San Jose win in regulation tonight. The Flames will be back in the drivers seat of this thing

I think they get it.

They started the year with two young goaltenders, 2 real NHL defensemen, and likely three top six forwards.

Watch their start vs Dallas and then watch their start against the 32nd ranked team the Sharks.

Whats the difference there? 2 weeks? They may be tired and they're definitely hurt but I'm not sure its that much worse than how they were for that game even though they did lose Zary against Dallas.

That game against San Jose is one where you need to impose your game early and suffocate them. They didn't. They had to pull it out of the fire.

Its not a harsh take, its just my eye test. We'll see tonight how they start.

The Flames well know they don't have the offensive talent of the Avs, Caps, and (blech) Oilers of the world or the depth of the Stars, Knights, Hurricanes, etc.

These are phrases spit out by every team regardless of skill level.
"they have a lot of skill over there"
"we will have to outwork them"
"we have to get pucks behind them and get to work"

Still remember the 21/22 Flames talking about playing a certain way because we didn't have the skill to play with other teams even though we finished 6th in goals for with 296 goals.....

If you're not putting up points like the top guys in the league, it should be easy to know that what the coaching staff is saying is not only true but also dictates the type of game they need to play. How bad would it be if we had a bunch of players that legitimately thought they were on the same level as Makar or McKinnon? I don't think Huska has been indirect at all when talking about matching the skill of some teams.

I'm guessing Andersson has some type of lower body / foot / ankle injury.

Not really practicing or taking part in morning skate. Except we've heard about him taking some solo skates with no equipement on before games.

Which to me is the "can I actually get my foot / ankle / leg into my skate and reasonably play in this game tonight" pre-game test.

Weegar I think has a lower body injury too - but don't think it's to the extent where Andersson is yet.
