I'm referencing the Jarnkrok trade Treliving made while with the Flames.

It's a red herring argument about NMC's. If Toronto is truly a contender, then no star player would have trouble waiving for a trade to them. However, it's far more likely that Treliving doesn't go after those kind of players because he plays it safe and only goes after depth guys for the playoffs. It's been his M.O. forever, and that isn't the problem itself, it's that he pays the same amount of assets for these 4th line, 3rd pairing guys as other GM's pay for experienced high skill guys. It's just bad asset management.

Good luck with Tre as the GM. He'll bleed your cupboard dry over the next couple of years.

Not only Treliving overpays for depth but he gets guys who may look good on other teams and think they'll automatically be a fit. I feel like depth guys are much more specific where they thrive, depending on a specific fit (systems/linemates). That's why we see some many one-offs and Treliving is always there to pay premium for a depth guy having good season.

From the other thread:

As of now, the Maple Leafs won’t be picking in the first round again until Backlund is 39 and Wolf is 27. Treliving signature asset discipline.

They also traded two of their top 6 prospects at the deadline. Their number 2 prospect projects to be a third-pairing defenceman.

Now do Florida.

It's obvious that the Leafs' upper management have decided to go for it while they still have their big four forwards. That's their core and they are going all-in. The difference between the Leafs blowing all their futures to reinforce their core and the Panthers doing the same is merely that the Leafs haven't won a Stanley Cup for their troubles – yet.

(For clarity, I do not expect them ever to win the Stanley Cup with this core, and I would be quite happy if they never won it again. But if they have any chance at all, this is it and they should make the most of it.)

It doesn't much matter who the GM is when the team is in its window and the GM's boss wants to win now.

8 games in, and Brandon Carlo (0+1) is outscoring him so far ...

I understand "going for it", but paying two 1sts and Minten for two depth players is still insane to me.

The issue IMO isn't moving the assets...it's moving the assets for 3rd liners and guys that aren't there long term.

Laughton + 4th + 6th for 2027 1st, Grebenkin
Carlo for 2026 1st, Minten, 4th
Lybushkin for 3rd, 6th
Schenn for 3rd
McCabe, Lafferty for 2025 1st, 2026 2nd
1st for Sandin
3rd for Liljegren
O'Reilly, Acciari for Gaudette, Abramov, 2023 1st, 2024 2nd, 2023 3rd

So since the start of the 22-23 season they have traded 2023 1st, 2025 1st, 2026 1st, 2027 1st, 2024 2nd, 2026 2nd, Sandin, Minten, Liljegren and a handful of other picks...and all they have on the roster to show for it is McCabe, Laughton, and Carlo.

If before the 22-23 season the Leafs went to the trade market and said "We will give you 4 1sts, 2 2nds, Sandin, Minten, and Liljegren" I feel like they probably could have done a lot better than McCabe, Laughton, and Carlo in return.

They also gave up a 1st to dump Mrazek (and got a 2nd back), gave up a 1st and 2 4ths in the Foligno 3-way trade, and a 1st to dump Marleau

I agree with that, up to a point.

From a GM's perspective, paying assets for pure rentals can actually be preferable to acquiring players with term. It means he can load his team up to the last dollar of available cap without putting the team in cap jail for future seasons.

Unfortunately, the guys you really want to add to a contender at the deadline are seldom available, because they are already playing for other contenders. So you end up dumpster-diving and paying a 1st plus for a third-line forward… or, like Tampa a while back, paying almost a full sleeve of draft picks for a player who doesn't move the needle. It's wasteful, but it's part of the cost of business when you're trying to push a contender over the top.

Treliving has trades 10 1st round picks. This is likely his last job.

6 goals for the Leafs tonight, Laughton still pointless.
