Carolina can't take much less than they gave up. They could've made it work with Rantanen as a rental if there wasn't the offer that got them to save face after the initial deal.

Stankoven has potential but Rantanen is a proven asset for a team looking to contend.

Over exuberance and or hubris of the Carolina owner strikes again.
Dallas doing this the right way; get an extension in place before the trade.

Rantanen didn't want to leave Colorado, and probably not the west. Carolina thought they could convince him in 3 weeks plus the 4 Nations, to sign the better part of the rest of his career there.

With Seguin out for the year does Dallaa need to send back much? Especially if Carolina retains half of what's left on Raantenen. Plus if Heiskenen is out until the playoffs start, that's two big tickets on LTIR.
