The cost for Vladar is paying more value than he is worth to get Conroy to move him. Think the equivalent of a 2nd round pick.

Is that the going rate for a back-up goalie?

If you can't even get a 3rd round draft pick for Vladar then just keep him.

I get what conny is thinking but if he thinks he’s going to get a 2nd for him he’s looney. I have my doubts he could even get a 3rd. Unless vladar is going to re-sign at a much lower cap hit I would trade him for a 4th or 5th. If they can’t get that then sure keep him for rest of season. If wolf goes down the flames are toast anyway. It’s not like he is some insurance policy if wolf can’t play.

You have to take into account how this looks to the other 31 General Managers. If Conroy thinks his player is worth a 2nd but trades him for a 5th because "that's all I could get", that could affect future trade negotiations.

It could, but the problem would really rest with Conroy for setting unrealistic prices in the first place. If that were the case.

If Conroy could get a 2nd for an inconsistent sub .900 backup, he would have done it long time ago

There is basically no market for backup goalies in the NHL unless it’s almost free like today

It’s kind of a catch-22 (or something like that) is what I’m saying, though. If you have no retention spots left, it means you’ve used them, which is how you get value out of them. They’re limited on purpose, so a team that has no slots left is actually getting more value out of the slots than a team with one, two, or zero slots left.

San Jose used them to benefit the team. So they’re in a better situation than the Flames, currently.

From what I understand Vladar is a guy the Flames want to keep for the rest of this season at least. He partners well with Wolf and they would rather leave Cooley in the A for the rest of the year. So it becomes a situation where unless you overpay for him he isn't moving.

Plus Cooley's SPCT has dropped like 27 points since his high earlier in the season (which was unsustainable)

True the team in front of him is significantly different too though
