If you have a player whose NHL contract does not start until he is 21 he probably is not very good. It is more like 19-21 3 yr deal and then 22-26 5 yr deal and gone at 26/27.

If I were an intelligent GM looking for a competitive advantage, I would angle for a job with a large-market team. Bigger budget for the team, more pay for me.

I think people freak out that everyone will leave. Everyone deals with the same cap.
Players will stay. I am confident in that. Build a winning organization and the players will want to stay. Give them stability not a new coach every few weeks and they will stay. Let them be them and they still stay.

Go crazy, embrace chaos. Make the max term one year, and no resigning of anyone before free agency day. Make every year a new team, with a more engaging off season as they scramble to reassemble teams.

Lol! You should have come for dumplings with me and Vlad a few years ago. He essentially said the same thing.

Or make every player a free agent and have like an expansion draft every July in reverse order of the previous year's standings.
Obviously not being serious, but it would be fun. Although you wouldn't get attached to players or the personalities either.

I get the sentiment behind “just don’t sign max deals” but I think it’s a mistake to just write it off as something to protect GMs from stupidity.
There are only 4 GMs that have been around for longer than 8 years, and only a third of GMs were hired before 2020. In reality, it’s a competitive, shorter term position when players, more often than not, outlast the people who drafted or signed them.
It’s fine and dandy for a GM to come out and say “I’m not signing any UFA longer than 4 years,” but that puts them at a competitive disadvantage. All it takes is one GM willing to go longer, for any number of reasons, and they stand to lose a good player.
Even good, well respected GMs are signing guys to 5-8 year contracts that take them well into their 30s. This isn’t something exclusive to “stupid” GMs.

Problem with these 8 year deals is it only hurts the fans. And the owners I guess. For the most part, GM’s don’t seem to be around long enough to see the bad years.
Unless of course it’s a klunker from the start, something we know all too well.
MLB doesn’t have max contract terms and they seem to control themselves better.

If it hurts the fans it hurts the product.
Maybe NHL revenue growth would be higher if the players agreed to work harder (aka give up on the 8 year retirement deals).
Just kidding that will never happen without another lockout.

Do they? 27 contracts in MLB history have been 10 seaons or longer, with 20 of those being inked in the last 10 years since 2014.

The NHL is becoming boring and stagnant. Shorter contracts should encourage more player movement. Leagues like the NBA and NFL are far more fun to follow from a player movement perspective.

I think they should continue allowing 8 year contracts for RFA’s, and make the max term for UFA’s 5 or 6 years. Otherwise it’ll probably be a lot harder for a team like us to keep our drafted players long term.

Ya the only reason baseball was ever able to keep things under control is owners colluded to screw the players. Now that they can’t, crazy contracts are happening more and more. Soto could get 15 years $700m plus.

NFL?
Stars very rarely move unless its divas requesting a trade. NBA is similar
NHL has the most movement by a mile on trade deadline day

Long contracts only hurt the fans of GM's signing BAD 8 year deals.
You think the Oilers with Connor and Drais were thinking they were hurt locking them up longer at cheaper deals?
https://www.spotrac.com/nhl/contracts
Here is the list of guys signed to 8 year deals (A few players that are on older/pre change rules still this year)
Lots of stinkers but also lots of great deals.
So it is only an issue when you sign the WRONG player(s) to these types of deals.
I am sure Flames fans would love us to get McKenna in 2026 and see him leave for LA or NY or Vegas at Age 26 in his prime after 8 years (5+3)
If anything they should just allow a buyout every 3 years with no cap charge if people are worried about anchor contracts. You could even allow these to be traded!

That’s basically the CFL model. You can go from last place to champion in a year.

Reducing the max contract length would get rid of a lot of the cap circumvention hijinks, while at the same time making many more players available at the TDL. Would be a great move if the PA would agree to it.

Flames would have no problem hitting the floor, and never have.
What they don’t need is the remaining five years of $10.5M on a 50 point player when the new CBA kicks off at in 2026/2027.
