Expect a Barrie signing shortly I’ve been told, Craig wants some more veteran presence back there and Barrie can QB a powerplay.
I’ve also been told to not write some of those bubble guys in group 2 off yet, group 1 by no means is the locked in starting lineup. Craig is pleasantly surprised that a handful of young guys have made it very interesting and he’s not about to go back on his word that having a solid camp means you wouldn’t have a legitimate shot at making the opening night roster.

Can't say I like signing Barrie, willing to eat crow, but I have not been a fan of his game.

Nothing. Both should be sent down. They won’t be picked up on waivers

Maybe I am in the minority but I have thought Barrie has looked very good in the games he's has been in.

Guys like Coleman, Kuzmenko, Mantha should be on their way out this season.
Same goes with the defense.
|
Coleman isn't an easy trade. Kuzmenko and Mantha should be gone at the deadline. The Flames would need equivalent salary coming back anyways so may as well try and pump their value. Another half season in the AHL won't kill any prospect's progress.

Yeah it is obvious Barrie is an NHLer. I am kind of shocked he landed in Calgary. At the end of the day if we trade salary for a any pick at the deadline with him it is a big win. We have always seen other teams do this, so I am glad flames are taking advantage of this. Even if it means Bru or some of the other younger Dmen end up playing big minutes pre-deadline in the AHL.

I am a big fan of loading up the AHL team and throwing tons of ice time at our rookies to develop them and give them confidence. I think that a call up during the season 10-20 games into the season is the best way to go. It lessens the pressure.
I don't think putting these young guys in the opening night lineup is the right thing to do. It increases the pressure and if they don't live up to it, I think that's worse.

It's not talent level that will win Schwindt a job over guys like Pelletier and Coronato- he can't provide what those guys do, but they also can't provide what a guy like Schwindt does. Every team needs a certain amount of guys who can fold the pastries, but also some guys who can grill the steaks. Schwindt can play a 4th-line checking C role, take faceoffs, win battles, and play a physical game- those other guys can't do that. The coaching staff seems to really like him.

Also Schwindt can sit in the press box 40-50 games a year and you dont have to worry about ruining his development.

I'm not a fan either, but I think he'll be flipped at the deadline for an asset or two...

Unless they’re lights-out elite prospects, most 1st rounders spend 80-120 games in the AHL as part of their development. Guys like Tkachuk are the exception, not the norm.

They have Yegor and Zary as options at center too. Not sure I would potentially lose Pelletier for Schwindt.

Think they are 2-3 million over the floor.

I would have kept Honzek up. Not Schwindt (if that’s the final roster).
Also would have kept Grushnikov over Hanley.
But what I was really getting at was the suggestions of keeping Pelletier on the big club.

You don’t keep Grushnikov up to be a 7th-8th dman. If he’s not playing in the top 6 you send him down to play regularly and call him up when injuries happen

I like how, despite being the same age and same draft year Schwindt isn't seen as a prospect by us so he can be in the press box, but Pelletier, who we've watched since draft year need to play to develop and can't be sat.
