There used to be a Cougar bar just off Electric Avenue called the Brass Rail. Older women looking to pickup younger guys.
It was actually called the Brass Ring. Alternatively known as the Brass Wrinkle. It was in the red brick building on the NW corner of 10 Ave & 8 St SW.

I was born in Calgary but my family moved out to BC when I was still a kid, so I only really have a handful of memories of the city being so young at the time - one of my fondest was when I went to a summer golf camp at Shawnee Slopes as a kid. On the last day Buckshot and Benny made an appearance and spent time hanging out with the kids & families, signing autographs, doing photos etc.. To this day I still remember the jealous look on my dads face when he came and picked me up and I told him I got to meet Buckshot lol.

I was on the show with my kindergarten class circa 1985-6. It was very exciting. My mind was blown that Benny was not an actual bear.
EDIT: Another memory: Buckshot asked my friend his name, which was difficult to pronounce, so my friend just batted the mic out of Buckshot's hand. He became something of a legend around our school after that.
Ron Barge and Ed Whalen are two people that were just such wonderful Calgarians and beacons of goodness that you just wonder if there are any people left like them. And die-hard Flames fans.

I was 15 and at the stampede. I was in line for slurpees in weadickville and this tall MFer budges in front of me, much bigger than me, But I told him to get to the back of the line. He looks at me and says something basically like "What are you going to do about it". The guy behind me tells him to get to the back and he listens and leaves. I turned around, and it was Buckshot that had my back!

And the spot for a pretty dark incident/chapter in Flames history.
Details are not required but it was not good and its the only time im aware of that the club used its cache to protect one of their guys. (Fully aware that other things might have happened that i am certainly not privy too)
Nothing to do with Buckshot...so lets just stay on that subject....Calgary icon.
At our school we used to call those ice cream cups 'dixie cups'. Not sure where the name came from.
On some flights today they serve the modern day equivalent, with plastic tongue depressors.
Pretty sure its the manufacturer of the actual cups. Like Solo Cups. Why are they called that? Because they're made by the Solo Corporation.
Dixie cups are made by Dixie Co.
Man...this is like a 'memory lane.' I just remember doing Bottle Drives for Sports in the early 90s....
"Go collect Trash for the team children! And when you get back we've got this gigantic orange McDonald's cooler filled with a substance that vaguely resembles juice and hot dogs that are mostly just snouts...."
Anyways...RIP Buckshot!

If you thought this season would have a happy ending, you haven't been paying attention.
Was one of the only shows I got to watch as a little kid in the 70's. Also went to school with his nephew, everyone always loved Buckshot no matter how old you got. I don't think I ever recall anyone saying anything bad about him or making fun of him - and how could you. When I think of Calgary personalities it's definitely him and Ed Whalen that come to mind first, and I don't think there's been anyone similar since.

I went to go see him in elementary with our whole grade and he didn't show up. He had some demons but man was he funny. Never did see him in person :/ RIP
So sad!
Buckshot was a staple for years at lunch time.
A few years ago (post COVID), I was at a game and noticed I was sitting close to him in the same row. Really glad I got the chance to tell him how much I enjoyed his show, how much of an impact he made on kids, and what an unforgettable Calgary icon he is. I told him “I imagine you get that a lot” and he just smiled and patted me on the back. His daughter told me he does get that all the time, and it means as a ton to him everytime.
RIP Buckshot!

There's a name I hadn't heard in a long time! Our family moved away from Calgary in the early 90's as I was about to enter my teen years. Larger than life characters like Buckshot & Ed Whalen were one of the many reasons that Calgary was such a special place to grow up during the 80's.
Sad to be of the age where we're now seeing little pieces of our childhood pass away.
RIP Buckshot
