You cannot infer anything as it relates to growth from that imagery, just that there was a heat signature when the satellite passed over the area.

Ah, ok. Well the heat signature appears to have gotten a lot bigger at least. :/

Don't get me wrong, it's not good unless they get rain. There will be some serious enhanced winds in those valleys that lead straight to Jasper.

Need rain bad. If not rain, cloud and lower temperatures will help. Christ, I'd settle for a northerly wind at this stage.

Wind has been, and looks to mostly continue form the SW. For the most part that should keep the fire east of Jasper at bay. Unfortunately the one to the south looks to have moved north a fair bit last night, and could be a real threat. Also a few hot spots showing right near the base of Marmot.

So both of my kids work at Glacierview Lodge, which is on the 93 south of Jasper. By chance the younger guy was home in Calgary for a couple days when this all broke out. My older boy drives buses and the glacier cats and they were all set to assist with the evacuations, which meant driving south to highway 1, west into BC and making a huge turn back to Jasper. Halfway there they were radioed that they weren't needed and they were to return. One day later they got evacuated themselves (he's with us in town and most of his coworkers are in Red Deer accomodations).

Now I see there's a fire south of Golden. This is crazy.

A few friends are off to Jasper to help fight the fires. Two from up north, Peace River area and one from the coast.

Hoping for the best to all involved.

We brought the trailer home the beginning of July though, and it will be a bit yet before we take it back out - could be a lucky thing that we brought it home.

my kids are camp staff just east of water valley this week. They arent in any immediate evac notice, but it sounds like they must have had a staff conversation about it.

How heartbreaking for Jasper. And also for those firefighters, to have to give up and flee. We were up there 2 summers ago, hadn't been there in 27 years prior to that. I'm now glad we managed to spend a bit of time there, especially if it all goes up.

Damn. I can't even imagine what it must feel like to know your home is probably about to be torched. Both the sadness of it, and the practical wtf would I do if I didn't have a home for the next ~year or more.

I’m surprisingly emotional by the news the fire has reached the southern bit of town and emergency services seem to be evacuating.

I recall talking with a Banff author about how they were worried they’d lose Banff 5 or 6 years ago and I thought it could happen. He’d been evac’d from his home.

The only hope is that rain is forecast to start in 2 hrs.

I am starting to wonder if it’s only a matter of time that Banff, Canmore, Fernie and other places like it will burn. Maybe not totally, but partially. Hopefully all the work will help save Jasper but it doesn’t sound good, Jasper park lodge would also have to be at risk and hard to imagine how marmot basin escapes unscathed.

Latest update is there are multiple structural fires, devestating, what an awful day.

Lytton, BC was destroyed in 2021. They still haven't done large scale reconstruction.
