Sure, because they aren't in the contender stage. But take a look at his transactions this summer - he's done nothing but acquire guys in an attempt to go to the next level. Settling on Petry, instead of Hanifin, flies in the face of everything he has done in the last 6 months.

Well as we saw this summer, teams with cap space were able to add good players at a fraction of their value. So ya cap space is pretty important. Not to mention when you have a lot of upcoming prospects you probably want to be strategic in how you spend your money. Not to mention you'd like to see how your prospects pan out to determine where you should spend your cap space to best fill the holes on your roster. So ya I don't see why Yzerman would trade good prospects who will be on value contracts for a guy like Hanifin who is going to need a huge deal. A guy like Petry costs you nothing and fills out your top 4 for a couple years while your own guys develop.

At some point, you have to try to win, and convert your credits (prospects and cap space) to actual assets. And that is what he has been doing all summer.

Petry does nothing to improve the team, he is roster filler.

I don't get it either. Hanifin would have given them a legitimate top-pairing today, as well as a potential monster of a D core with Seider, Wallinder, and Edvinsson in 3-4 years.

I agree but I'm not sure right now is the time they need to do that. Also, who knows if Yzerman views Hanifin as a player worth making a move like that for.

I thought Hanifin made a lot of sense for Detroit, but Petry does make more sense as a stopgap over Hanifin. Hanifin means you are giving him quality top 4 ice time at all times, otherwise, extending him beyond this season for another 7-8 years is pointless.

Detroit is likely hedging on ASP being ready in a few years when Petry is likely done. Petry is still a decent player, just a 4/5 at this rate though. I think Detroit down the line is wanting a top 4 of Wahlman - Seider and Edvinsson - ASP. They likely will be in play for another top end forward or maybe upgrade Raymond if there's something out there. If they were to trade with us Lindholm now makes more sense after this move, assuming Petry stays healthy.

Yzerman was fine, but as with all GMs, ended up feeling the pressure to actually show results after some time in the form of wins and post season appearances, and shifted out of the rebuild and develop mode too soon.
