Interesting thought, and perhaps a good companion thread: “those who achieved greatness, but then stuck around a little too long and wrecked it”.
I kind of wondered about what more Kurt Cobain would have achieved musically had he not killed himself. The grunge genre kind of fizzled out later on, would he have adapted or kept it fresh?
I've wondered this at times as well. He'd have rich and famous but he was always so stubborn, would he have changed? I'm not sure that would have been copacetic with his ethos.
Then again, time and age change us all.
But I maintain that the quintessential 'Rock Star Road Map' is Dave Grohl.
He rocks out hard and then goes home to his wife and kids and is a totally normal guy.

I just have a hard time hearing Cobain expanding to other genres. It doesn't compute. But he sure had a gift and found a niche where it could blossom.

Yeah, some take an interesting trajectory. If you told me back in the early 90s that Ice Cube was going to make dumb family vacation movies, I am not sure what I’d make of that.
As for Cobain, that was probably always going to be his fate, or else become a hermit. It seemed like it agonized him to have people appreciate his music.
The guy who invented the Segway. Think of all the other cool #### he could have brought to market and then died while using.
Dean Kamen, the guy who invented the Segway, is still alive.
Jimi Heselden is the man who died while riding a Segway. He was the owner of the company at the time of his death, but he only bought the company from Kamen about 9 months earlier.

I guess he achieved greatness before his death but Alexander of Macedon was 32 years old when he died and had just recently given his speech that pretty much convinced his soldiers to not stop until they conquered the world.
Jesus wasn't much older either but almost certainly achieved greatness because of his death.
van Gogh died at 37 never knowing he would be a world renown artist.

Died in house arrest for heresy for pissing off the pope at 77 after several health problems as a result of aging including blindness. He wouldn't achieve "greatness" during his life until his scientific discoveries were truly respected, but wasn't exactly cut down in the prime of his life. Could probably have an entire other list of people who died never knowing they would be famous and revered like Emily Dickinson.
Going way back but Jesus Christ. Reversed it three days later, though.
Basically got to the Gates of Heaven then pulled an uno reverse card and came back. The doorman at the Pearly Gates got fired over it and replaced with Doorman Pete.

Unplugged in New York is basically a folk-country album that your grandma can enjoy. Kurts song writing skills and inuitive understanding of melody are both top tier.

Steve Jobs always seems like an interesting one to think about to me. For better or worse, his products at Apple are a huge part of everyone's lives. Apple's innovations since his death have been pretty incremental. I think it's a good bet that our every day electronics would look quite different today if he survived.

When he passed, roughly 90% of his voice work as Shrek was complete, and he was also to be cast in a more crossover serious role in the life of Fatty Arbuckle. He was so close to mainstream stardom (and getting away from 'fatty falls down' roles that were bothering him), it's so tragic.

Half the songs on that album are covers. Vaselines, Meat Puppets, David Bowie, Lead Belly. Kurt was famous for saying this about the Pixies:
Quote:
When I heard the Pixies for the first time, I connected with that band so heavily I should have been in that band - or at least in a Pixies cover band.
Kurt was basically in a Pixies cover band. I think his song writing is decent, but is vastly overrated, and he borrowed heavily from better, yet more obscure, artists.

Kurt Cobain was a gut punch, as he was the most important figure in that eras music which was the first genre that shaped my musical tastes. That said, Chris Farley passing was way sadder to me from the loss of greatness point of view. I instantly felt robbed of so many good times watching his comedic genius. That coupled with how sweet a guy he was and how tragic his spiral was affected me so much more. I can binge watch Farley movies and clips endlessly and never get bored. My family regularly quotes his line from the pepper boy sketch at dinner time.

JFK is another one, could've been a different world had he not been assassinated
I tend to lean more toward RFK. I think he was the brains and moral compass behind JFK and likely would have been likely to enact real meaningful change in the western world.
