At what Chucky is going to get? I don't think it's likely. At VERY MINIMUM we would get 2 1sts a 2nd and a 3rd round pick. Unprotected.
Over $8,402,975 to $10,503,720
2 First-round picks
Second-round pick
Third-round pick
Over $10,503,720
4 First-round picks

I really, really doubt it, as it would involve an unprotected '23 1st. I think the few teams that can have near total confidence about making the playoffs next year don't have the cap space.

If Tkachuk doesn’t want to be here, I don’t see him signing an offer sheet where we could just match and he’s stuck here.
I could see a team working a contract with him, and then trading for him rather than offer sheeting him.
IF he signs an offer sheet, I think that would make life easy for Treliving and us. If it’s ridiculous you take the 4 first round picks. If it’s a reasonable number you match and now have him signed for a good length of time.

Could an offer sheet just be a short term contract though? A team might offer a 1 or 2 year deal with a really high salary, especially if the team has already talked about an extension while negotiating the offer sheet. I think that is what Carolina did with Kotkaniemi.

With a really high salary we’d be getting into 4 first round picks. I just think at that point a team would trade for him instead. Especially a team that would require say ten plus million cap space so they would most likely need to trade salary out or back to us.
It’s a really interesting situation, but with the way Gaudreau turned out I’m afraid that Tkachuk may just sign his QO. I really hope Treliving knocks this one out of the park with some wizardry.

Once a player files for arbitration no offer sheets can be presented.
As for Tkachuk? If he signs an offer sheet I take the compensation. We would probably get less in a trade.

I believe QOs have to be accepted or reject by July 22, so ideally, Treliving has about 5 days to sort out Tkachuk's status. If Tkachuk accepts his QO and then says he doesn't want to negotiate, that will be tough.
Five days isn't a lot of time to get a long term deal done, so I am praying that Tkachuk simply rejects his QO in favour of negotiating. I am surprised guys like Friedman haven't been digging into this more to try and find leaks in Tkachuk's intentions.

Yeah he’s definitely signing his QO if nothing gets done.
Yay we have another date to dread as Flames fans.
Could this off season be more fun?

The only saving grace is that Tkachuk might feel better negotiating a long term deal now coming off of a 100 point season, than possibly taking a dip next season and then negotiating a long term deal. Plus, his agent likely realizes that the team is a little desperate right now for some positive PR and to stop the bleeding. That gives them a little more leverage.
Having said that, Tkachuk seems like the kind of guy who bets on himself and isn't considering a decline next season, nor is everything always about money.

He still had a 100pt season. Even with a bad season, he is still going to get paid

Ya unless it was 11x5 or something Calgary would just match.

I’m honestly hoping Phillips gets rewarded with a one way contract and a good look finally. He’s done everything asked of him and more, is a Calgary kid, and has room on the line up as a small, skilled and shifty winger. Please Treliving give him a chance already!

Is it correct that Tkachuk has 3 options to play in the 22-23 NHL season:
(1) Sign the qualifying offer by July 22 (and sign with the Flames between January 1-June 30, 2023 OR sign with anyone from July 1, 2023 on),
(2) Reject the QO and sign a different deal with the Flames by the RFA signing deadline, and
(3) Reject the QO and sign an offer sheet by the RFA signing deadline?
As far as which option Tkachuk will choose, I have no idea. I do not have his level of risk tolerance.
If Tkachuk is going to choose (1), the Flames need to trade him.

A 1x8.4M offersheet (presumably a handshake 7 yr extension to follow on Jan. 1) would be the doomsday scenario, because the Flames couldn't trade him for 1 year if they matched.
Very high stakes poker for the offering team, but compensation would only be a 1st + 2nd + 3rd.

Sleep easy. Now that he has filed for arbitration, he can't accept an offer sheet.
