Sure opens up for speculation doesn’t it?
Johnny always wanted to play at home. Not signing massive deal already or committing. Flyers clearing space.

Plus the Tavares situation happened quite recently, looking very similar to the Johnny situation now. It's not a stretch to speculate that history might repeat itself...

How so? It's pretty common knowledge that Gaudreauis interested in playing there.

Now they could try and go that route but I don't see how that is smart... even for Johnny to go play in what is likely a losing situation for a couple years

In the end, this really doesn't have any impact on their ability to sign him one way or the other.
The only real time crunch for him signing a new deal is with the Flames ability to offer 8 years today.

If he's dead set on going to Philly, they can come to terms on the structure of the deal early tomorrow, but not officially file it until they've made the moves necessary to clear the space.

I'm sure they'd want to do it sooner than later so any potential trade partners don't disappear, but it's not super-urgent like it might be if a player was seriously weighing multiple offers and wanted to sign right away.

So, prepping an offer of 11.7 for Johnny?
At that price I guess “no thank you”?

It likely won't be that high, but that's what they could sign him for tomorrow without making another move.

Seravalli says he likely takes less money to sign elsewhere

Johnny isn't going to sign or he would have by now. Work out a trade with te flyers: sign Johnny to 8 years, trade him to Philly for jvr, next years unprotected first + + then trade jvr at the deadline.

Why would Philly give up all that for 1 more year on the contract?

They're rumored to be offering their first for someone to take jvr. The + is for the 8th year to lower the cap hit

I’d take 1 more year of JVR and a 1st plus in a sign and trade, all of course given Johnny is leaving no matter what.

Kadri seems like more of a Philly type target then Johnny . Talk of them trying to get tougher to play against and being too soft.

Do teams really have to make space before signing him? If you get him, how much time do you have to get compliant? Next day?
I wonder if there are lots of camp dump trades cued up contingent on what team actually signs him.
