I think he hit the head first and a lengthy suspension should be coming Trouba’s way. I’m a bit biased as I’ve always disliked him.
Regardless, I don’t think there’s any place in todays NHL for predatory hits against a defenceless player. It’s not a hockey play, it had no benefit to his team or the game, it didn’t effectively separate the man from the puck, it was most certainly not the best available play to regain possession of the puck. Literally the only purpose of that hit was to injure another player.
If pro and college football can introduce targeting, so can the nhl. There is no place in the game for hits whose sole purpose is to injure.
If you need to see people attempt to injure each other with no consideration to actually playing a sport, go watch MMA. Injuring the other guy is the purpose of that sport. It is not the purpose of hockey.

Echoing those concerned for his health, I hope he goes on IR for the remainder of his contract. Concussions are no joke. While neuroplasticity is a thing blows to the brain cause damage ranging from barely perceptible to seriously life changing. Being able to emerge from his playing days relatively neurologically intact is way more important than playing hockey.

If you want to see people prancing around with no repercussions to the situation they put themselves in, maybe you should watch soccer or basketball.

O please. We see hits like this all the time where the player pops right back up. This wouldn't even be a issue if no injury.
It was a hard legal hit with no intent to injure. It was a hockey play where the hit was meant to seperate the puck from player. Let's not pretend this is a Matt Cook headhunting hit.
Truoba barley even moved to hit him . He basically just stopped moving. Let's be real a large part of this is Khaira has a history of head issues . Like the Romonav hit on him wasn't that hard and basically just walked him with his ass to the mid section and hobled him. This wasn't even a play at half speed for either player.
Fernand is a great example of not being able to take a hit at one point. By the time he went on ltir he couldn't take a shoulder to shoulder check we see 10? 20 times a game? Everyone's different .
This is the hockey equivalent of a boxer having a "glass jaw"

You are everything that is wrong with "educated" fans
Why?
The rule is in place if your target/place of impact is the head and isn’t intended to include square body checks where someone’s head hits a shoulder first on a square check due to size differences. It’s for predatory hits “picking” someone’s head.
Quote:
Rule 48 – Illegal Check to the Head
48.1 Illegal Check to the Head – A hit resulting in contact with an opponent’s head where the head was the main point of contact and such contact to the head was avoidable is not permitted.
In determining whether contact with an opponent's head was avoidable, the circumstances of the hit including the following shall be considered:
(i) Whether the player attempted to hit squarely through the opponent’s body and the head was not "picked" as a result of poor timing, poor angle of approach, or unnecessary extension of the body upward or outward.
(ii) Whether the opponent put himself in a vulnerable position by assuming a posture that made head contact on an otherwise full body check unavoidable.
(iii) Whether the opponent materially changed the position of his body or head immediately prior to or simultaneously with the hit in a way that significantly contributed to the head contact.
I actually don’t think the hit was illegal either. I’d go as far to say I’d actually be surprised if he was suspended. The alternate angle looks like a square check (much more than the broadcast angle). It doesn’t really matter if he “hit the head first” as that isn’t the rule and there are variables to be considered outlined above. But I guess we will see.
Sure tough watching someone get KO’d like that. Especially a player we’ve seen KO’d before… makes me queasy when it happens multiple times to the same player.

I have to adamantly disagree with the bolded. It was absolutely a hockey play, and he was literally separating the man from the puck. I bristle at the idea that there's no place for a body check, especially when you're trying to keep the puck in the offensive zone. I have no issue with the general idea of the play.
However, the player was vulnerable. He did also hit his head first before anything else. He could have let up a little but chose to hit him as hard as he could. To me, this is a cultural issue the NHL has about "blowing guys up", and that has to change, but it will take time.
To me, it's absolutely suspension worthy for the hit to the head on a vulnerable player, but probably no more than 2 games.

Pretty easy to point out all the things Trouba should've done differently through a slow motion replay lol.
The onus has to be on players to keep their heads up as well, Trouba is as much protecting himself from getting steamrolled there as he is stopping Khaira.
Hilarious when people talk like these hits are discussed internally or pre meditated. Trouba isn't having a debate in his mind about which exact body part of Khaira his shoulder is going to come into contact with. He went center mass, tucked his shoulder and stayed on his feet. That's really all you can do in a split second.
The NFL implemented the defenseless receiver rule to eliminate plays where an unsuspecting receiver gets destroyed by a defender that has lined him up. I think the NHL would be wise to implement something similar. If a player had his head down he's a defenseless player and this is the type of thing that has happened in the past and will happen again. It's just not worth altering the life of a human being for a random hit in a regular season game.

Puck was lost in his skates...he had his head down looking for it...Trouba made a clean hit...Khaira went straight back and bounced the back of his head...'Hawks pretty much were just going through the motions after the hit, clearly a distracted team.
