NO.

He's been 'shilling' it.

All of it; with an appetite. I’ve been pretty harsh on this team for a few seasons, especially after the Dallas series loss. I expected more of the same this year. Understanding there is a long way to go yet I am pleasantly surprised.

Sutter has had a larger impact than I imagined he could. Or any coach could.

^This, the complete 180 of this team as a direct result of one man did not seem possible. D. Sutter may walk on cow s**t in the summer, but in my eyes it might as well be water.

I thought the team was going to be good at the start of last season. I was wrong. Covid bubble, coaching, whatever, it all went poorly.

But I saw no real reason to think that the team would be a ton better this year. Sutter's record last season was identical to Ward's, no miracle there. I saw Monahan as just... needing replacement, and had no hope for that. And Gaudreau had a poor year, and we lost Gio, so I mean... yikes.

Suddenly Sutter is a genius, Lindholm is a 1C making Monahan blessedly irrelevant, and the D core has been totally re-shaped by Kylington coming through and Gudbrandson actually not being a donkey.

And they're winning and winning and winning.. so I mean, jeez, I'll eat it, my expectations were for another middling year.

I thought they would give up 300 goals. Yeah, not happening.

Kylington — I always loved the potential and I had been clamouring for them to keep him and play him. But, I never anticipated him looking like a legitimate minute-munching top-four defenceman as soon as he received a regular role. He's exceeded even my relatively lofty expectations for him.

Honest question. How did you think a Sutter team would give up 300 goals?

Because, on paper, their defensive personnel coming into the season was terrible. I thought Gudbranson would be much worse, I thought Zadorov would be much worse, I thought Andersson would be worse, and I didn't anticipate Kylington being this good.

I thought this was a roster with one borderline top-pairing D (Tanev) and a couple 3/4 guys. What we've seen this year has completely invalidated that idea.

Yeah but again this is a Darryl sutter team. I honestly think he could pick 6 AHL veteran Defenceman and still not give up 300 goals.

That's like 3.5 goals a game. Has any team ever given up 300 goals in the last 20 years?

Yes, four.

I think I quickly revised the prediction to 250 goals, though, which is significantly more common — it's happened 105 times in the last 20 years. But that's also unlikely to happen.

Good thread! Personally, I should be checking the Food Network for some good stuffed crow recipes. I def did not see this coming. Long way to go of course but the work ethic reminds me of 2004. I didn't think Darryl could do it but he's def a mad genius. And who knew that he knew more about hockey than all of us here on CP?

… and then they start playing like last years team lol. Maybe I should complain and they’ll have a third period comeback and I can have a crow sandwich before bed.

Nothing to eat crow on just yet, but looking at recipes. This team has to start beating divisional foes with more regularity before they "prove the doubters wrong" and can start serving up the crow. Beating the crap out of the eastern opponents is fun, but losing to the teams that you are trying to beat out for a playoff position is much more important. Losing to Vegas and San Jose should be a moment of pause and recognition that the things that made this team a bubble team could still very much be a problem.
