3rd most even strength goals in the league since 2019 for a Canadian, all while playing significantly less minutes than those around him.
Mangiapane is the new Marchand, but with less licking.

I said he’s entering that “elite” conversation, and I believe he is.
He’s scoring even strength goals at an elite level, and he’s playing an impressive two way game while also penalty killing quite well.
Using “he’s never scored 20” as a point of conversation…he scored 18 goals in 56 games and 17 goals in 68 games the year before that.
More time, and his bigger role he’ll go from entering the conversation to being the topic of it.

The career high was 32 in 56 games, with no injuries. He scored 18. I get how people dislike “on pace for” but the last season was a full one. He’s 15th in scoring among Canadian forwards, I believe, so if they just picked by points he’d be in And some of those are not real choices (Bertuzzi).

Does making team Canada on points pace make him elite? I certainly don’t think so.

9th most ice time among our forwards at 5v5, actually feels a bit under used so far this year.

I’d love to see him play more too. Hailey Salvian addressed this with Sutter recently. It comes down to the line and Dube not being able to win faceoffs.

“They aren’t getting as many D-zone starts. And that’s about four shifts game, so that’s a 1:40-2:00 range where the line is coming off because someone else is taking the face-off.”

Went and collected some stats on my own.
Since January 1st 2019
45 EVG - that puts him 29th in the league while playing 12:18 of even strength time per game (169 games)
Since January 1st 2020
29 EVG - that puts him 17th in the league while playing 13:31 of even strength time per game (92 games)
Since January 1st 2021
20 EVG - that puts him 17th in the league while playing 13:12 of even strength time per game (64 games)
He's entering the conversation of "elite". Here is a random sampling of guys who are higher than Mang on the EVG list since January 2021: Matthews (18:06 of even strength time), McDavid (17:55 of even strength time), Marchand (14:13 of even strength time), Debrincat (15:51 of even strength time), Connor (15:51 of even strength time).
What Mang has done since establishing himself in this league as an every day player is incredibly impressive, and yes - he is entering the "elite" conversation in my eyes.

And let's keep in mind he's not competing with the league - he's competing with Canadians in the league.
He's still a longshot, but not a "we're homers for even mentioning it" longshot. and a lot depends on selection philosophy.

Agreed.
Mang to me looks like a good candidate to be an extra forward (if he keeps the play up) because he can be deployed in so many different ways. Good to have a swiss army knife in the reserves when going into a tournament like the Olympics. It'd be fun to see him make the cut.

If Shanny beat Hasek in the shootout, maybe Zamuner's career would have been elite

Well, you dug deep for that one - anything to avoid giving a Flame some credit, hey?

I don't think Kris Draper was ever considered elite either and he made the 2006 Olympic team. Maybe a little more controversial would be Chris Kunitz, who I would not consider an elite player made TC in 2014.
Mangiapane is a good hockey player for the Flames. I am still on the side that he isn't an elite player as of yet but has the potential to become one.

Draper was considered the best defensive forward of his time - I would call him elite in that respect. I'll give you Kunitz.
If Mangiapane makes this team, I think it will elevate him to elite. But we'll see. And first, we'll see if he makes it (which I don't expect)
