I was under the understanding the groups were based on different stages of quarantine and back to play as well.
There's also different levels of on ice access, so I was also wondering if the different groups might be different game speeds (which is kinda similar, but different than conditioning).

I was actually wondering if the Flames had the equipment manager imitate the skate boots as a roller blades with maybe custom rollers to imitate the blade sharpness and styles to imitate the boot feeling in the roller blades. I agree could be an advantage.
But if they literally took the player's normal boot and retrofitted them as roller blades... that's pretty darn cool and I didn't even know you could do that.

That is very cool and rather thoughtful, even if it doesn't turn out to be a huge advantage.
I'd be curious how much skating some of these guys did.

Backlund (and many other Swedish NHLers) have been big proponents of a Swedish company named Marsblade for quite a few years now. They designed a roller holder that attaches via rivets in the same manner a traditional ice holder does, allowing for the same boots to be used, even interchangibly. Nearly all of the NHL has got on board with their product in the last two or three years and I imagine all teams outfit players with them, if desired, in the off-season.
It's a really cool concept, especially for high-level players with custom boots.

What!? I’m ordering these for sure. I have been looking at roller blades, I don’t know why I don’t have them already. I count down the days to skating season, but I can just do it on land.

Disappointing to me from that Johnny article was that he didn’t touch the ice in 3 months. For a player having a down season, it’s not a very good look.

He might not have had a choice. I believe New Jersey basically closed down everything that wasn't absolutely essential statewide. There's a good chance the rollerblades were the only option.

Failed insurance salesman needed to bribe his way into party power to change the rules. Now he's doing so.

this is BS NDP talking points. The NDP catered to the unions to get elected and did nothing for the staff but inflated billing by doctors. I have 7 direct relatives, siblings/spouse/children working in the health care field. They have all had opportunities in other provinces/states and have all declined because of the cost of living, insurance and work conditions compared to Alberta. Get off the union and NDP talking points - SORRY FOR DERAILING BUT THIS TOPIC BEING BROUGHT UP ALL THE TIME PISSES ME OFF. And name me one doctor who has left and stayed away.

While I knew the Flames were unofficial clients of Marsblade and have been for a few years now (like most teams), here's confirmation from Giordano back in May.
https://calgarysun.com/sports/hockey...ns-after-goals
Quote:
“Our equipment guys, Mark DePasquale, Corey Osmak and Ben Dumaine, those guys have done an unbelievable job of getting rollerblades out to all the guys,” Giordano said. “They shipped them all and they actually put the blades — the Marsblades, they’re called — on our actual skate boot. So it’s your ice-skate boot, and the Marsblade actually feels really similar to skating. You have to sort of balance yourself, so that’s been good.
|
And an NHL.com article from back in April.
https://www.nhl.com/news/nhl-players...se/c-316760258
Quote:
Barkov, Anaheim Ducks defenseman Hampus Lindholm and Pittsburgh Penguins center Evgeni Malkin are among the growing list of players who are trying out a new in-line skate called Marsblade, which uses a patented technology called Flow Motion Technology designed to mimic the feel of skating on ice, according to chief operating officer and inventor Per Mars.
Mars said he recently sent full-team orders of his skates to several NHL teams.
|
Just scanning their Instagram looks like a whole bunch of notables too: Pavel Zacha, Oliver Ekman-Larsson, Patrick Kane, Evgeny Dadanov, Jake Gardiner, Jeff Skinner, Elias Petterson, Kevin Shattenkirk, Connor McDavid, Auston Matthews, Roman Josi, Max Pacioretty, Cale Makar, Jack and Quinn Hughes, Jason Spezza, Mitch Marner, Dougie Hamilton, Brent Burns, Marcus Johansson, Gustav Nyquist, Nik Backstrom, in addition to Gio, Backlund, and Derek Ryan specifically of the Flames.
Awesome to see an ex-NHL draftee enjoy success off the ice.

As part of my work, I supervise (for at least one block) about 12 family medicine residents a year. Of the ones I have asked in the past 6 months, every single one is leaving. If I didn't have a 4 kids in local schools and universities, I'd leave, too. The disrespect and bullying (including pulling confidential contact information to phone doctors and the Health Minister himself showing up on a doctor's doorstep unannounced to berate him in his own home) are unbelievable, and there is complete uncertainty about the future, because the government has overridden doctors' right to freedom of association and given itself carte blanche to do whatever it wants in regards to its contractual relationship with doctors. I agree that changes need to be made to improve the quality and efficiency of health care, but those who are experts in providing it should be consulted as part of the process. Most of the government's changes will increase health care costs by shifting care from lower-cost providers and settings to those that are more expensive. There are changes that could be made in the system to significantly reduce costs, but the government has shown no interest in considering them, and it out of hand rejected an offer by the AMA to cut fees across the board in spite of the fact that there was a valid contract in place at the time and Alberta's doctors were under no obligation to make such an offer. And don't get me started about the government's signing of a massively bloated contract with a multinational corporation to separate healthy, young, uncomplicated patients from their family doctors in the midst of a pandemic and then advertising this MNC on the government's own website and social media, at a cost of care significantly higher than if those patients had remained with their family doctors.
Fortunately for the Flames, the players' health care is largely managed privately by the team (although this did recently result in a controversy about players having early access to influenza shots).
Anyway, I hope that it's nothing serious with the Flames who are being held out, the team is already (if you include Hamonic's opting out) getting to be about as short staffed as they were at any point throughout the regular season (they have had remarkably good health the last 2 seasons), without a single game being played.

So basically from this thread there was absolute no news from Day 3 training camp.
Summary of thread info:
1) Gaudreau is likely out of shape and may have had direct exposure to Covid.
2) Backlund left the ice early and is so insignificant that there was no speculation as to why

I can name about 8 (mostly classmates), and unfortunately dozens more who were looking for work in Alberta but now it’s simply no longer an option. Most of these are Alberta raised doctors.

This thread has gone wildly off topic, but my wife is a doctor and we're considering leaving the province. Add one more to the anecdotal pile.

Oh? The unending "Gaudreau sucks" articles from the bottom of the barrel media members like Francis and Dreger aren't satiating your interest in hockey?
Yeah, me neither.
