Considering all those things, I think it is difficult to argue that Aho's deal is a good one and TKachuk's isn't.

It is true that each dollar of cap space is more valuable the smaller the cap.
They are different deals and the players are different too. I personally believe Aho is more valuable (but hard to quantify) so for me, the Tkachuk equivalent deal for Aho is $7.5 million for 3 years. At that number, his $8.5 million over 5 years looks good. But the longer the deal the more uncertainty about the market, the cap etc. so there is no definitive right or wrong.
On purely a three year deal, IMO Tkachuk should be just a little lower than $7 million.

It’s too bad the cap doesn’t adjust for taxes or this would be a bit easier comparison.

The Flames have 2 years at $10.635M in their back pocket before Tkachuk costs as much as Aho. And even at that, we got Tkachuk for 3 of those years at a much better cap hit - when we really need it.
Yes, Aho is a C. And arguably a little better than Tkachuk (which is very debatable). But Tkachuk is $1.5M cheaper for each of the next 3 years. That is a huge advantage for the Flames.
Back to Connor's deal - great for the Jets because they got term.

But Calgary may never see that 5th year.

Also a reminder, the Oilers could have also had at least one of those three but they traded that #15 pick for Griffin Reinhart.

But Edmonton would have invariably managed to blow that pick as well.

That is true. I had heard they were interested in Svechnikov but also heard they liked Connor. Guess we'll never know.

Good deal for Winnipeg as they didn't have to overpay to get the player to stay around long term in what is likely one of the less desirable cities to live in in the league. They have the Connor - Scheifele duo signed to a pretty great value for the next five years and can probably slot in cheaper players than Wheeler on the right side without sacrificing too much and allowing them to balance their lineup. As the other team with two tough RFA negotiations, Jets fans should be happy with both their deals compared to the Leafs who are going to be spending $22.5M for their RFA top six forwards vs. the Jets who got both of theirs for $13.75M

Someone on HF did some math and the Jets actually got a lot more of their core signed for a lot less over a longer period of time. Chevy is great at contracts, I'll give him that.

I was going to post this then I saw your post.
T K A C H U K.
Never mind 3 years, his dad played in the league for 18 freaking years. This is not a new NHL name. Drives me nuts.
