I think McLellan brings what Babcock would bring to this particular team. Its also something they need. Hardassery.

I wasn't overly impressed with McLellan in Edmonton but it was clear that he was better than Hitchcock. Interesting he picked a similar situation in Buffalo of a team that despite drafting a lot of top 5 talent can't seem to get out of it's own way.

I don't get this "McLellan is a good coach" drift. He has yet to prove that he can take a bad team and coach it to the top. So far, he's taken a good roster/good team in San Jose and made it worse. Then, he's taken an even better roster - the one, that half of NHL teams would trade for according to Lowe... OK, I'm kidding, he's taken the no good team and he couldn't do anything good with it either. What are the clues suggesting he's a good NHL coach?

In reference to my pal Eric’s report, here’s my understanding of the situation: Todd McLellan is a leading candidate if not THE leading candidate to replace Phil Housley as BUF HC. McLellan has also been in negotiation with LA and the Kings appear to remain in the mix.

I don’t believe a contract has been negotiated between McLellan and BUF but that isn’t to say it couldn’t happen in day(s) to come. As fate would have it, McLellan was scheduled to be in BUF this week anyway for @NCAAIceHockey Frozen Four. Todd’s son Tyson plays for @DU_Hockey.

The Sharks essentially performed worse every year he was there, then they went to the Final the year after he was fired.
I don't think you can say his coaching record looks bad because he was coaching a bunch of chokers. It seems more likely that the team looked like a bunch of chokers because of his coaching.
It's one thing to look at a guy like Bill Peters and say that his poor record in Carolina was because he didn't have much to work with, but McLellan won the President's Trophy his first year in San Jose and had the same core of players leading the team the entire time he was there.
For better or worse, his record seems like a pretty fair assessment of his performance.

If I was a star head coach looking to sign in LA, I would definitely use the deep pockets and desperation of buffalo ownership to leverage myself more cash with LA.

Based purely on team potential, why would someone want to coach in LA instead of Buffalo right now? One team is old and slow and sucky and probably only going to become more like that. The other team is young and fast and sucky but with a lot of positives that indicate they could turn things around.
Seems like there's a much better opportunity to set yourself up for success there. Of course, the money and climate would play a role beyond all that.

Because old and slow teams can be dismantled pretty efficiently with the important veterans kept in-place. Coaching in LA has tremendous advantages of living in one of the best climates in North America with all of the beautiful amenities a big city/resort suburbs combination can offer to a high-income earner. Buffalo is a dump.

Buffalo is also Edmonton east in terms of tanking and losing culture. If he gets to coach the Kong’s through a rebuild and get top $ and a 5 year term it is a no brainer.

He took that no good Oilers team to within one game of the third round. That's quite the accomplishment.
