With both LeBrun and Molberg weighing in on this I think it's happening.
I am starting to brace myself for an inevitable Mark Stone acquisition.
Tighten your sphincters, everyone!

A big question for me is I'm not sure I want to give Frolik up right now. I think he will be a valuable playoff player.
I'm gonna say if it goes down : Dube, Mangiapane 1st, Cond 1st
Gaudreau-Monahan-Lindholm
Tkachuk-Backlund-Stone
Bennett-Jankowski-Neal
Frolik-Ryan-Hathaway
That is crazy deep

Would be interesting to put Lindholm at center if this happened
Gaudreau - Monahan - Bennett
Tkachuk - Lindholm - Stone
Jankowski - Backlund - Neal
Mangiapane - Ryan - Hathaway
Frolik in for Hathaway if he sticks around./
of course, tough to break up the Gaudreau - Monahan - Lindholm line.

Cap HAS to move even if they land stone. So I'd expect the frolik and brodies to be moved instantly.
Besides, I think bridie goes to Ottawa if they do win the trade.

Scoring Winger

This isn't some average year rental piece that may or may not be a good addition. The guy is one of the best wingers in the league and is extremely good. If BT thinks he can sign him to a reasonable deal,I hope this gets done. Mark Stone will bring a ton to this already good team.

I don't see how the Flames could possibly re-sign Stone and Tkachuk when they're not giving up any salary.
I would love a re-signed Stone, but I'm wondering which contracts the Flames send the other way.
I think the Flames would the Flames have to give up 1 or 2 of: Frolik, Neal, Brodie, Backlund, Ryan, Stone, Hamonic.
That's the real question IMO

I think at this point we should all come to grips with the realization that anything the Flames move in a trade will be a valuable player. But Mark Stone will be a big upgrade on whomever ends up as the odd man out.
The cost is going to hurt. Hopefully it will be more than worth it.

We would need to shed cap somehow. That could be through putting Stone or Neal on LTIR until playoff time if needed, but I doubt it would go that way.
Watch him deal Brodie to NYR for McQuaid and a pick, then acquire Stone...

Ottawa will need an NHLer back that eats up some cap space and helps their situation and the Flames will need to get that head start on unloading money for Stone, and while a lot of the roster you probably would not want to disrupt, I think the perfect balance of those things that I don't think alters the team is to send Frolik the other way. He's also a good player that would be useful there.
If you trade Brodie for picks in June also, then I think you'll have the room to sign Stone and Tkachuk.

Regardless, I hope Tre holds strong, makes his offer, and tells Dorion he's got a midnight deadline tonight or he's moving on.
Get Stone in the lineup tomorrow or else he has to try and swing Plan B and any track any other new developments.

It's not all that scary if you know you'll have Gaudreau, Monahan, Tkachuk, Lindholm and Stone in your top 6 for the next three playoffs or more.
You're in better shape over the length of a potential Stone contract than you would with a couple 20 something picks. You'd be fortunate if they turned out to be anywhere near Stone's level.
|
I understand all that, but it limits helping the areas that are most/more pressing....for the future as well.
There will be no money to fix goaltending if required, it will limit re-signing at least one current roster player, and it will almost assuredly mean trading at least one other roster F and at least one current dman.
It feels like fixing a problem that does not exist....and ignoring ones that might.

A big benefit of adding Stone in particular, which other available players don't bring, is his defensive play. The Flames' top line simply seems to get outmatched in their own end without Lindholm, so having another player who could play that 1st line RW position and cover for some of those defensive lapses would be huge in terms of line mixing.

Stone and Tkachuk on Line 2 would be absolutely nuts.
A top 6 of:
Gaudreau-Monahan-Lindholm
Tkachuk-Backlund-Stone
Would be an absolute nightmare for opposing teams. A lot of posters in here underestimating just how big of an impact player Stone is. He's the type of player that drives plays and has constant energy. His two way game is top notch. Having him and Backlund on our shut down line, with Tkachuk to agitate would make the best second line in the NHL.
I obviously don't want any part, if Stone is just a rental, but if the Flames can work out a deal before the trade, they should try and get this done.

Friedman said the other day that whatever the actual price will be for Stone, the Flames can pay it. Whether they want to, is another debate.
Treliving is aggressive, but he's also not stupid. I just cringe at what the asset price paid will do to our prospect and draft pick situation.
Maybe they can add Stone without giving up a roster player, then with an eye in the summer of increased workload and responsibility for the youngsters next season, you can turn Brodie and Frolik into 3 high draft picks somewhat restocking the cupboard. Heck maybe you have a tough conversation with Neal in the summer about fit and the future.
Or maybe you live in the now and deal with the later, later.
In my opinion, the Flames need a top six forward. Stone is the best out there. Hard not to be excited about that lineup.

The teams with the most talent in their prime years tend to win the Cup. Calgary does not have to fear any team including Tampa if they land Mark Stone. They will be every bit as dangerous. Go for it.
