Is this ban something that is actually allowed according to the CBA? Seems odd. If they can ban this what else can they ban?
Drugs, Skiing, Bungee Jumping, and other dangerous sports. I am sure its in the contracts. There was player for LA a few years ago who's contract was voided because of drug use(Mike Richards).
I remember during the Flames PPV broadcasts many years ago that Iginla, Conroy, and a few other Flames used to play Age of Empires 3 together quite often on the road.

True, but there is a significant legal difference between unilaterally banning something and term in a contract which has been agreed to by the player.

“Jarome was one of the most competitive guys I’d ever seen in my life. Anything that was going on, he wanted to win,” recalled longtime teammate Robyn Regehr, second to Iginla among the Flames’ career leaders in games played. “We used to play this ridiculous computer game called Age of Empires. We’d play it on the plane. Technology wasn’t what it is now, so we would have wires running everywhere, duct-taped to the ground so they wouldn’t trip anyone as they were walking around.
“Denis Gauthier was really, really good at this game. I wasn’t that great, Denis was awesome, and I would say that Jarome and Craig started as average. But they didn’t stay average for very long. I heard from sources — reliable sources — that Craig was hiding in his bathroom, reading these books about how to improve his Age of Empires strategy, and Jarome was always sending him stuff.”
As someone who plays a lot of fortnite.. I understand where they are coming from, but at the same time if they're paying together its definitely a really great team building/bonding activity. Seems better than going out and getting drunk or just sitting not interacting at all with the team

Based on some of the things I have read in this thread, I don't think the issue is the lack of socialization so much as it is a lack of discipline to ensure that players are administering the necessary self-care while on the road. I could see this as especially important to coaches and management.

On the Spitting Chiclets Podcast with Keith Tkachuk he talks about Matthew being up late playing Call of Duty or Fortnite online with Mike Smith & Troy Brouwer late at night after their kids go to bed.
If it was actually a problem, it would have been only at home games as (prior to being out of the playoff race) the Flames were a pretty epic road team.
And if so, that would mean Mike Smith was playing Fortnite, as he was the (major) reason we sucked at home. I am skeptical that 36 year old Smith would have been playing Fortnite.

I wonder if it has something to do with sleep patterns being disrupted. I would think west coast teams are the most negatively impacted by changing time zones.

Except Keith Tkachuk tells a story about how he found Matthew playing COD or Fortnite with Smith and Brouwer late at night when visiting Matthew in Calgary
That is ridiculous. What someone does on their own personal time away from work should be up to them. If a player is playing video games to the point that it's affecting his play then scratch him. If he doesn't want to change then get rid of him.
You're not wrong, but this is not new.
As I type this I am in a dry camp (alcohol banned) on my own time. Sometimes restrictions are part of the job.

I remember that. Keith was talking about how he thought they were going to go out in Calgary to crush some drinks. He thought Matthew went to bed early and when he went into his room he found him playing COD with Smith and Brouwer because they are only allowed to play late after their kids go to bed.
The Canucks feel that some players are gaming so much that it hurts their performance on the ice and thus the ban.... All of us know that isn't the case...
