I still don't get why the Sens traded for Phaneuf in the first place.
In 2016 they traded for a 30 year old dman with 6 years left on his $7 million AAV deal. Yes, they shed the Michalek and Cowan contracts, but those contracts both ended last year. Phaneuf can still be an effective dman, but he hasn't been worth $7 million for years.
It is somewhat amazing that a budget team like the Sens is paying a player $1.75 million not to play there and adding another boat contract with Gaborik.
The Sens are the posterchild of poor asset management. They've had some really good players come through their ranks and they consistently shoot themselves in the foot.

Eh.
- He can still skate for the most part. Not what he once was but still fast
- he's scored at a 20 goal pace this season
- he was a beast in the 2017 World Cup games
- He had 27 goals in 2014-15
- he put in an epic performance in the Kings' 2014 cup run (14 goals in 26GP).
He's probably a bad contract in absolute terms (4.85M for three seasons after this one) but I'd take my chances on him on our third line if it means swapping him for Brouwer (4.5M for two seasons after this one).

They manage money terribly but get away with it because they draft pretty well.
Look how much they chose to spend on their backup goalie.

LOL.
Reading this thread is hilarious thinking back to 90% of this board spitting all over their keyboards in rage "But.... but...Phaneuf is only 22, defensemen take forever to mature!!"
Then the next year, "But.... but...Phaneuf is only 23, defensemen take forever to mature!!"
Meanwhile Karlsson was tearing up the league at 20 years old.
The guy is a plug, has always been a plug, has the intelligence of a drain plug both on and off the ice and padded his stats his first few years playing against 3rd and 4th lines.
I'm sure he'll do a great job manning the ghetto blaster in LA's room.

Dion is fine as a 2nd pairing guy and does bring a decent offensive game...but his salary is so far out of whack for what he provides.
Even at 25% retained he is to much money IMO.

I think LA easily wins this trade.
- Dion is still a #4 dman
- Gaborik is broken down and signed for the same amount of time
- With the salary retention it's a basic wash for these two players
- Thompson replaces Shore
I don't really get why OTT does this trade

This trade is about dumping actual dollars, and getting worse on the ice. Nothing else.

Yeah sure, in hindsight it was probably not the worst trade, but at the time the Flames traded a 24 year old defenseman with a Calder nomination (alongside Crosby and Ovechkin), a Norris nomination, a 20 goal season, and an all star game selection under his belt. To say he was a plug in Calgary is, in my opinion, flat out wrong. He struggled the year they traded him, but was great before that.
Edit: and Karlsson as a 20 year old had 5 goals and 26 points in 60 games. Good, but hardly tearing it up.

Nick Shore is a really good bottom six guy, like a Backlund without the offense. I think most of the value to Ottawa comes from him

So the sens are just going to be buying Gaborik out, right?

Sens make out like bandits here. Why? Melnyk is cheap, and this is what he was aiming for.
It isn't just the 4.7 million in actual dollars. It is the fact that Gaborik is almost always having a long-term injury. Insure his contract, save more actual dollars!!
In all seriousness, I think LA won here, though not by much. Phaneuf is so inconsistent out there, and is slower. I am not actually sure who I would least like to have on my team to be honest. Maybe it is a tie. I wonder how much LA will get by retaining the other 25% in a future trade? Phaneuf at 3.5 sounds more palatable as a #4 defencemen.

Big win for LA, Phaneuf underrated as he’s overpaid

Is he a bottom 6 forward or a Selke finalist?

If their true motive is to save as much money as possible, yes. Wrap him up in bubble wrap and put him under house arrest until the buyout window opens.

As a casual observer of the kings...can anyone explain why a borderline team with the best GA in the conference would trade a scoring forward away for another defenseman? Is there a recent injury issue here?

I miss 2005/06 Phaneuf. That guy was a dynamic player.

So does Phaneuf. He's nowhere near the player he used to be. Such a shadow of what he used to be and slow as molasses now.
