Basically, goalies are stopping a lot of pucks because they've learned a lot about their position in a short amount of time and have gotten really, really good.
A key theme in the article is that the equipment changes, to goal pads specifically, go hand in hand with that evolution, these changes were in fact essential to the change in style and its effectiveness.
