What's the deal with all that cymbal banging making a gawdawful racket in Chinese parades? I mean, isn't the whole idea to get people to come to the parade?
|
The cymbals, I agree are annoying and loud to say the least! They are still used to preserve the tradition that started when legend said that an Emperor was able to defeat an enemy who led tigers and leopards (I believe), by crashing these cymbals together, frightening the animals away.
to add on to what hellohockeyfan said, I think it also has something to do with chasing away evil spirits and bad luck on festive days. Like chinese new year, with the firecrackers.

Hop Sing on Bonanza. Accurate or stereotypical portrayal of Asians in the Old West?

Umm...I don't think I've ever seen that show lol..sorry. But if it's an old 50s western, then the protrayal is probably just a smidge off.

Table 5, it's really not that hard. You just have to remember. Be respectful to her family members...buy them good expensive gifts if necessary. It makes it even harder if you're a white guy, so be sure to always be respectful and lie about how much you enjoy the mother's cooking. Once you're in with the family, they'll always remind their daughter how awesome you are. This helps, because she will probably get annoyed and give in to you.

This is the most important piece of information I've read in this thread. But I want to know more (perhaps this would best be address to a Chinese girl, but you probably have some insights I don't have).
Are Asian girls generally interested in white guys? I've had experiences this year with a girl from Singapore and a 2nd-gen Korean girl (I think Korean is my new favourite nationality), but they were just one-time things. Which is usually fine by me, but just in case I am really interested in an Asian girl how do I know whether she is willing to date a gwai lo?
I must agree icarus! I LOVE Korean girls. IMO, the most beautiful Asian bar none.
But to address your question, whether or not an Asian girl will date a white guy is completely dependant on the girl obviously. Personally, I've found that the Asian girls who tend to have mostly non-Asian friends, and date non-Asian guys veer back towards the path that leaves them with an Asian guy.
It's the Asian girls you see who have all Asian friends and Asian boyfriends, who end up with a non-Asian guy in the end. Can't really explain why, but this is the trend I've seen with my friends.
A good indication as to whether or not you have a chance is to talk to the girl about how much she values her parents' opinions and wishes, and then find out how her parents feel about her marrying a non-Asian guy. If her parents are stuck on her marrying an Asian guy, your chances are pretty slim.

Right on the money.
Yes, i notice that trend as well. I do find that Korean girls are more willing to go against their parents wishes to date another korean guy and date white guys.
Just like what hellohockeyfan says, it really depends on the girl. Some girls will want their children to be immersed in their cultural root, so an asian guy is the natural choice.

As a honky with some experience in this area, I must say that this cannot be stressed enough.
You'd hate to make plans to move to some far off land for some dame only for her to say "oh yeah, my dad says I'm staying here in his house, and you have to live in another town if you come here." The sooner you learn something like that, the better.

I'm asian, and yes, my hair can turn red during the summer when it's really sunny (along with my brother's and sister's hair).
And yes, I have straight pubes. They have never been curly.

I have an asian friend who always eats with her mouth open. It's kind of annoying and when my friends talked to her about it, she said that it was an asian custom, a way of telling the chef the food is good and appreciated, or something along those lines. Is that true or is she making stuff up?

LOL...how shall I answer this...hmm...
Generally, asians are messy eaters. A banquet with a 12 course meal will cause a lot of slurping and messy spillage. I do know that the japanese drink their soup loudly to show appreciation for the meal. Chinese do eat with their mouths open, but I've never heard of it being appreciative of the chefs cooking...though it is highly possible that may be the case. However, I have been repremended by my parents for eating with my mouth open...and I have been scolded for sticking chopsticks into the ricebowl and leaving them there (looks like incense for the dead or something). Even though it may be culturally accepting, she should learn to eat with her mouth closed. She is afterall, in Canada lol.
P.S. Tell her guys don't find that "HOT" in a girl. Maybe that'll get her to stop.

I have a Vietnamese friend who refuses to date Asian boys... funny enough she's stereotyped them herself, saying they are either drug dealers or engineers, too dangerous, or boring. You'd have a chance with her, if I could ever get her to ditch her loser of a boyfriend.

I was in Vegas with a Chinese business associate and, while he was gambling, someone tapped him on his shoulder. He told me later that the gesture was considered to be bad luck.
Is this true or was he pulling my leg?

What do Chinese people *really* think of the commie government? Do their opinions change when they leave the country and get exposed to western media?
Another question while I'm here:
Some Chinese guys seem to have an unusual routine in the bathroom at work, and I'm wondering if it's a cultural thing: Every time they use the sink, they'll splash water all over their faces (like washing, without the soap), and then cup some water in their hand and slurp it up. I've never seen a white person do this, and I wouldn't have any desire to do so.
Is it something cultural, or am I just encountering weirdos?
p.s.: Interesting idea for a thread. I work with many Chinese people and am often confused by their "strange" ways.

How long does it take you to make my DVD player? Is it just one person doing all the work, or do you have a number of children soldering electronic components together?
Are the sweatshops primarily male children or female children?
Is it harder to find glasses not having round eyes?
Do you understand humor over the internet? (please tell me you do)

one time my dad, bro and i were eating at Treasures of China in chinatown. and when we were getting food, at the buffet, there was a white cop there, and my dad insisted he go first as he looked in a hurry with his styrofoam box for take out. and the cop suddenly says "lay seen" (you first). and my dad laughed got into a whole conv.
turns out the cop went to do missionary duties in hong kong for a while.

Why yes! I believe my uncle tried once. Nothing happened though. The Tiger did not rage and attack him or anything.
Well...at least that's what he told me. Then again, I was 12 and very gullible. So...yeah...

i think this is harder to answer, as the majority of chinese you see are from hong kong, a well known democratic state. i don't run into too many mainlanders, so i wouldn't really know and i've also longed to have that question answered myself.
