Very much this. So many of these big contracts turn out to be too much in the end.
Looking at Hamiltons and Brodies deal, I think some players might be seeing the warning signs too. Even if you don't get bought out, a contract too big might have the fans turning on you, or you'll end up on the trading block with nobody wanting you.

Hard to believe that Semin has no trade value at 50% retained, that would be cheaper than a buyout.

Constantly injured, atrocious defensively and just generally apathetic all around all while cashing $7M paycheques.

Right but at 50% retained it wouldn't be 7M paycheques.

To gain assets. I would have had no problem taking on Semin if the 'Canes gave us LA's 2016 1st. Overpayment? Sure, but that contract is atrocious.

Completely possible that different team = different outcome.
Not saying it would have happened but if Semin bought into the Flames culture he'd be up there in the Rocket Richard argument. We know he's good even in an enigmatic state. A hard working Semin = goals galore.

If we can get Semin on a 1 year for cheap? Why not. If he's being apathetic then whatever he's gone, if he's trying then he's one of the most talented players in the world? Then why not?

I don't think that Semin meets the Flames standards.

Just for those interested in Boyes, here's my take.
He's become very, very slow. Footspeed and top speed. He's a big body but plays softer than
colborne. He still has a very good shot, but it now takes too long for him to get it off. Not a great passer. Boyes could be a serviceable 3rd liner for some team, but the Flames' focus on team speed makes him a poor fit, especially when we have so many bottom 6 forwards in our system. Honestly reminds me of Curtis Glencross.
It's the same reason that Florida is getting rid of him. Doesn't do enough to be a solid checker and doesn't have enough speed to contribute to the top lines anymore. Great guy, but the Panthers have better options nearly ready for full time duty.

If Semin were to come to CGY, I would be very happy. Not may natural RW/RH Snipers out there these days.

Sure do! I sympathize with the ones that get treated like red headed step children. Even if they have no souls, they're still human!

I'd take Semin on a Setoguchi-esque deal but that's about it.

1 year. 2.5/per. Coach of the year kicks his ass into shape.
Ferland-Bennett-Semin.
That's if we can't nab Kessel with 2m retained.
