What ever 1 of them will take a 1 year league min contract. He will be the 6/7 D-man.

Why would you not keep all three? They don't have to play in the NHL. Diaz and Potter clear waivers IMO (if you have to move them up and down).

IMO Schlemmie is ahead of the other two and Smid and Wotherspoon as well.

The problem I envision is that we are going to acquire a D-man who is of a greater caliber than Schlemko & Diaz. (Smid and Engelland are under contract still.

So once we acquire said D-man, is Schlemmer willing to sign a league min deal to play in the AHL? I bet Schlemmer can find an NHL job elsewhere.

i'd let potter go.

I'd sign diaz and schlemmie and take my chances in the free agent market.

we have cap room and could go after one of the lower/midrange UFAs or take a salary dump from someone else, but i would be okay going with the 7D as outlined in this thread.

injuries will happen, and that is where i see the young guys getting a chance with the flames.

nonetheless, i'm pumped for next season after all that the team is learning this season, and the season still has life left in it yet!

Hopefully this is the year we pick on a cap troubled team and get a really solid 3-4 Dman.

Use those extra picks at the draft and make it happen Brad.

I hope the Flames upgrade either the second pair or at least the #5 spot. If Smid is coming back he would almost be the 7th Dman and there wouldn't be room to being any of these guys back.

I just like Schlemko because it's fun to yell Schlem it out at the hockey games.

If I had to pick one to keep it would be Diaz.

I would much rather see another high priced defensemen brought in though, in part because, if the Flames plan on moving out a veteran forward or two for all this great forward youth... would they even be able to reach the cap floor without adding some significant salary on the back end?

Diaz is worth keeping around. I think he moves the puck well and his creativity is pretty fun to see at times. He doesn't get a gold star on 'stay at home' defense but he improved greatly during his short tenure here.

I really hope we don't unload Diaz.

I definitely would like Schlemko back. IIRC, before his injury (last year?), he was used as part of the shutdown pairing in Phoenix. Playfair mentioned in an interview that, in his opinion, Schlemko has top-4 potential. That is pretty high praise coming from Playfair (he helped develop Gio and Brodie). Given all that, I want the Flames to take a flyer on Sclemko.

I like Schlemko and Diaz but if you can upgrade them, you absolutely should. Can't fall too in love with guys like these, they are dime a dozen depth guys and there are only seven spots up for grabs. Gio, Wideman, Brodie, Russell and Engelland are set, that's already five. Smid could be there too, so there's only one spot left (though he would be a likely candidate to move if healthy IMO). Personally I would be thrilled if a legit top 4 guy came in and bumped everyone else down, even if that means Schlemko and Diaz leave (maybe Wotherspoon will be ready next year). Frick, Schlemko and Diaz might go to a hole like Edmonton when they strike out on other options. Have to think they might want to be more than 7th on the depth chart, and might be even willing to go to a crappy team to get a better role.

Out of the 3, I like Schlemko.

Diaz has his moments, but Schlemko seems more consistent.

Potter isn't terrible and I would sign him again for AHL depth possibly, but it would have to be a two-way.

Potter walks. Schlemko and Diaz get 1 year deals on the cheap. Smid still on long term IR but might unofficially retire.

Gio - Brodie
Wideman - Russell
Schlemko - Engelland/Diaz

5 defenceman who can move the puck quite well, forces the young d-men in our system to really step up their game if they want to earn that spot on the defence pairings. I think Hartley should really be giving Wotherspoon more chances next year.

I would lean towards just keeping Schlemko for now, and then assess things next season depending on Giordano and Smid's returns and prospects' play during camp.

I think the only way Treliving doesn't sign a top 4/6 guy in free agency is if all of his advances are rejected.... but with all that cap space, I just don't see that happening. He is going to be targeting defensemen big time come July 1st. I'd be very surprised to see the same top 7/8 rolled out for next season.

Who's available July 1st? Remember dollar and term for Orpik? Yikes

Trade is where we need to target

I still think it's weird that Phoenix put Schlemko on waivers. He's been a decent bottom pairing guy for us and has even stepped up with some big minutes in some games. I can't believe their defense is better than ours that they figured he was waiver material.

Here's a list of UFA defensemen available as of now.

And I agree, I'm not sure we'd want to get chained down with the dollars and term that UFA defensemen will command in the off-season.

Caps fans think Orpik played great for them this year and was instrumental in stabilizing their defense, but I'm guessing you didn't watch him or the Caps this year.

The last two years likely won't be fun but if you want the player you have to commit or he will just sign with someone who will. I don't think anyone in Washington is regretting that signing right now.
