I'm happy with Jones and think that his contract going through to the end of next year is perfect. Contract $ doesn't matter, reasons were covered earlier.

FWIW, Glencross contract is great and wouldn't be slightly upset if he were extended. Only contracts that I struggle with are Raymond and Bollig just based on length.

Also, I had never seen this before, don't know if it's common knowledge or not, but a good resource for contract length on the Flames official site:

Backlund really makes players better. The amount of chances Jones got last game were mostly due to Backlund making great passes, plays or drawing players to him, giving Jones time and space.

That said, Jones playing with a chip on his shoulder, finishing checks and skating hard playing like a power forward obviously makes him so much more effective. When he is on his game, not playing injured, or trying to protect himself from injury he is a good soldier for this team.

Like him as a 3rd line winger. He's overpaid but that isn't a problem. I don't see him as a part of this team when we're really competing but in the meantime he fills his role effectively

I was going to post something similar - sell high.

When he's on his game and driving the net he's good - just needs to do that more consistently - agreed lately his best stretch of the season for him so far.

Also I understand where people have an issue with the over payment thing. We probably all know someone at the work place that seems overcompensated for what they do and it's hard to generate respect in that case. Different context with the cap floor and all but it's just something that on the face of it doesn't seem right.

Sell high for what?!

Why is everybody so obsessed with trading everybody at a high? It's not the stock market. Who is going to take his spot if we move him?

I think Hudler / Poirier / Jones is a pretty good RW lineup for the next 2-3 years. A very skilled player, a skilled guy with some speed and grit, and a big body who chips in 10-15 goals. That's good depth in my mind.

Fair to say his 20-25 goal seasons are probably a thing of the past but he has come around to be a hard worker and effective two way guy for the team. He's overpaid but in the Flames current situation it actually helps them get over the cap floor.

I've been critical of him but to his credit he's shown that he can contribute outside of the score sheet. Guys like Jones and Stajan can be useful players at this time of the rebuild as hard work is contagious and sets a good example for the young players so while their contracts would look pretty bad on teams spending to the cap trying to win cups they fit in well at the Flames current state of rebuilt.

Agreed. I have no issues with pending UFA's getting flipped for assets like Glencross and Ramo but it's a team game and you have to be careful you don't upset the chemistry which has been very good this season. Role players are very important and often overlooked by fans that think building a team on EA NHL equates into real NHL success.

No doubt, if you traded everyone when their trade value was high....you'd have a truly brutal on ice team and a bunch of HF fan boys drooling all over themselves about how awesome you could be one day when you get all those prospects together on the big team.....but you'd never do it because you have to sell high to get more picks and prospects.

Count me in as one of those people who absolutely wanted David Jones out of Calgary at the beginning of the season. I just felt like Flames are paying him big money but he was not delivering. Lately though, I see a big difference in his play. He might not be scoring like he supposed to be but I like that he is using his speed and size lately. He's been playing well and was not afraid to get in the dirty areas. I hope he keeps it up.

I think David Jones is a good player who is always hurt. Like a much less talented Marian Gaborik. We needed to get the good old boys out of town to move on, so I had no problems with the trade to bring him here. Ideally, someone more durable would have his roster spot.
