The dude obviously has some issues talking to women, and allowed that to creep into his professional life. I feel bad for the victims of his objectification, and I feel bad for the guy because he lost his job for not knowing any better. Sexual harassment sucks, just like coping with loneliness when you don't know how to properly express yourself sucks. It sucks all around.

What a poorly constructed comparison. It would read better like this: So anyone commenting on what it's like to be sexually harassed should actually have been sexually harassed?
Now, on to your main point. Displaced was commenting on the validity of opinions, not the right to have them. Maybe it "sucks all around", but there's still a victim here, and a predator.

Btw, I have been sexually harassed by a female boss, and a few times in bars.
Obviously as a rare thing I can pretty much brush it off, but I have a hint of what it would be like as a constant thing.
Pretty much the most annoying thing for me is that everybody has an opinion they just have to share when you mention it.

Cool. Can I arbitrarily decide whose opinions are valid too?
Only people with first hand experience in the NHL should be allowed to talk NHL hockey. Ban everyone not named Okotoker. Anyone else's opinion is invalid and shouldn't be voiced.

Yes, you may. Or do you disagree? Are no opinions more right than others? For instance, if you wanted to know an opinion about playing in the NHL, would you ask me or Okotoker? Oh wait...

Yeah, you still don't get it. The lady's opinion comes from a particular experience, and that's what she's talking about.
Or, you think my opinion on playing in the NHL is as valid as Ferrence's. Hmmm... could be that this lady's opinion on what constitutes sexual harassment, seeing as she was harassed, is worth more than some guy who (most likely) hasn't been a target.

Congrats on pointing out the obvious. Yeah, it's totally true that someone who's been a victim of sexual harassment knows more about what it's like to be a victim of sexual harassment. What I don't understand is the purpose served by making this point, other than to imply the arbitrary censorship of ideas and belittle the value of human compassion.

I don't like any of this. The loser bugging women, or the women that say online hockey communities are scary - spare us the hyperbole.

Displaced Flames fan made what I interpreted to be a comment on some opinions here that this story (paraphrasing), "Doesn't seem like harassment". I thought he was questioning the validity of guys making that comment. Something I question too.
I thought your response to that was in defence of their right to an opinion - which was never questioned. I don't need to consider all opinions equal to avoid "censorship". Not sure where you going with the "human compassion" thing.
Anyway, if I misinterpreted you then I apologize. These days the news down here is full of white guys telling everyone else there's no issue, move along. I let it get to me sometimes.

Calling the guy a predator seems a bit strong.

For me, this whole mess was a learning experience. I really like Mooney's writing and PD in general and at first, my response to the 'let's make out' line was a little giggle. But not being a woman... what do I know? Not much it seems...
I now have a better understanding of what harassment feels like.

Are you sure? He hasn't written anything on the blog since AUG 14.
I thought he was going to get a suspension and some kind of 'sensitivity training' - I think that's what they call it. That seems to be the norm for 'minor' sexual harassment in the workplace in the US.

the Editor said he supports him from start to finish on twitter, was agreeing with people who called it a witch hunt and 'contextless' allegations

@BrownieScott @HarrisonMooney does this mean he will get back to writing at @passittobulis ?

@Moosekayak @HarrisonMooney @passittobulis Yes.

he has defended him a lot in the past too from other writers, there are people who like Mooney but there also seems to be a lot who don't, including certain media people who have taken shots at him in the past on twitter or in columns

Seems to be something that could have been dealt with with a "please don't" and a click of the ignore button. But I don't have the entire story so it's tough to have too strong of an opinion. Not that it will stop some.

The problem I have with these type of stories is they treat propositioning someone as an assault - and it isn't. There is no right to not be hit on. This guy is asking for consent (albeit ineffectively) and being vilified for it.

I see what you're saying in a way, but it's definitely inappropriate. Would you randomly ask a female co-worker to make out with her? Comment on her appearance in a sexually suggestive way?
Maybe if it's a friend and you two have a mutual banter that you both like, or if there is some mutual attraction and you have a relationship of some sort that allows that then sure! But this wasn't that.
Women actually do have a right not to listen to sexual advances and propositions from men whom they do not have a sexual relationship with, just so you know.

Is this sexual harassment by the actual definition of "sexual harassment"?
I have always been under the impression that sexual harassment could only come from people that you work with/for. Unless I'm wrong about that (and I easily could be), it seems to me that this is more a case of a guy being creepy. While that is plenty of reason to make an example out of him by calling him out and maybe even firing him, I'm not sure that it justifies labeling him as a sexual harasser.

What a creep. His apology did seem genuine, but something tells me this guy has a long, long history of sexual harassment so maybe this will be his wake up call.
