Steps to decide. Must have a yes to each question:

1. Is he a goalie?
2. Is he from Finland?

Bye Joey

No. We need another Finn. Between Kipper, Ramo and Ortio, I don't want anyone playing in net unless they hold a Finnish passport.

^^ haha, beat me to it.

Let Joey Mac walk.

I would like to see Chad Johnson in Calgary. Doubt he will make it to free agency though.

I like Greiss. Always has been a solid back up. His career GAA is a 2.43.

I also voted No. I chose give Ortio the job, but what I actually meant is that its another position where we can generate assets. Joey Mac is a fine goalie for a backup in my opinion, but there is nothing to be gained from giving him this position. If it is used on a short contract for a UFA goalie to build up his value, or to develop a relatively young goaltender... we should do so.

However, I don't want us to get a backup that will play more than 20-25 games. The main reason being that every goalie is a bit different in the rebounds he generates, the weak spots he has, his communication with his teammates etc. This generates a situation where players have to slightly tweak their game for each goalie in order to defend well. So why make things even more difficult for our relatively young(inexperienced) team next year?

I voted no as I was disappointed in how Joey approached last season. His attitude reflected in his poor play and subsuquent demotion to Abby.

Would like to see soon to be UFA Jonas Hiller signed as the backup.I think he could push Ramo to play at his best and at the same time provide us with a solid backup.

It would be nice if Flames could find a good backup outside the organization without giving up any assets.
Nothing against Joey Mac but the time has come to move on.
Would like to see Ortio do one more year in AHL and get maximum playing time. So, voted 'no'.

Joey on a 1 year deal to give Ortio another year in the AHL.

I think its unrealistic to sign a UFA backup netminder to ONLY a 1 year deal, unless its Vokoun?/Brodeur in which case id rather have Joey anyways

Voted No.

MacDonald is an AHL caliber goalie at best and we already have a workhorse in Ortio for the farm team. No reason to start taking time away from Orts (wouldn't happen anyway unless Orts runs over the new coaches dog or something) And his AHL numbers this year were abysmal. No upside to keeping him.

We can easily sign a backup for Ramo with free agency as we have the money and contract space. I like the suggestion of Thomas Griess as I watched alot of Coyotes games and he is a decent goalie. Cristopher Nilstorp also jumps out at me as he's currently backing the Texas Stars to a Calder Cup final (and probably win) and looked solid during the AHL season. He's got a little Oiler stench on him, but Devan Dubnyk is also a UFA and not a horrible choice. There's a number of mid-quality goalies in UFA so signing MacDonald makes no sense. Go get one of them.

Same can be said for the farm team as Doug Carr had a good showing while with the team. I wouldn't even mind signing Gerald Coleman, goalie for the Kelly Cup winning Aces to backup Ortio.

Lots of options, no need to keep a 34 year old MacDonald.

Justin Peters or Alex Stalock please. Montoya would be my 3rd choice.

His job is to give Ramo rest and if we lose those games then we lose those games. This is year 2 so my expectations are still very, very low.

I mean, we could gamble on someone else, but why? And, as is obvious, Ortio needs to be playing games, games he isnt going to get in the NHL.

If Ramo gets hurt then Ortio comes up and Joey can still operate the door.
You want your backup to put pressure on your #1 to help elevate his game to the next level. Joey Mac can't do that and is of no use to the Flames.

Please no, sign a college kid instead if we are that desperate for a backup.

Can Burke make an exception for him and let him wear a high number, say 85

Time to move on from Joey Mac, but I think Ortio would benefit from a full year of professional starts in the AHL.

The Flames need to sign another goaltender, but perhaps one that would bring a decent cap hit as well? And only for a year or two.

I think Ramo played well last year, but I'm not ready to see him go full-Kipper mode and play a 70-game season, so ideally the Flames would sign a proven goaltender that could nearly split the duties with Ramo.

Tomas Vokoun???

Just to backpedal a little bit...

Part of me though, doesn't want a back-up that is a better option than Ortio if something happens to Ramo. If for some reason, Ramo gets hurt, I would like to see Ortio come in and be the temporary starter just to get the experience (sort of like last season). If we have back-up like Hiller or Greiss, I am not sure we could justify it. A career fringe veteran might be a better option for that reason.

The thing is the Flames need to sign at least two goalies, maybe three as I don't see Roy being re-signed. In that scenario MacDonald can fit in somewhere. I'd say as Ortio's backup in the A and door opener when one of our goalies goes down.

Cam Ward. Large cap hit, only two years left on his deal. He's a declining starter that is capable of playing 30 games and still being effective. Could be acquired for cheap.
