Ultimately I think Crosby has the major hand in who the coach is anyway. If he likes Bylsma, he'll stay.
Friedman said this morning that Lemieux wanted Bylsma canned 2 years ago, but Shero resisted. If Pitt disappoints in the playoffs again, Lemieux is likely to get his way. I tend to trust Friedman.

I don't think Burke will do anything one way or the other.

Whomever the new GM will be, I would assume he gets the decision there. I think based on the little we know about who the new GM may be (Burke dropped the hints early on that with him being President, the Flames could afford to hire a young rising executive who hasn't had that role yet), I would imagine Burke would provide the following guidance:

"A GM has only a certain number of coaches to go through before he himself gets fired. Hartley has been squeezing water out of this rock, and the guy you hire may do worse. Do you want to take that risk?"

I think Hartley is safe - at least for now.

Timing though - we may not have time to get a GM by the time these guys are available. I think it will still be Burke's call, and I am curious if 2 of the best coaches in the NHL (by all accounts) are suddenly available, what he will do...

No matter what anyone says, it will be overanalyzed in a hockey mad market. He is complimenting his captain and his coach. Period.

Wow, that is disgusting. Sorry if there was already a separate discussion, but that is brutal.

I hope we never see that happen to a Flames player.
That is disgusting.

Man up. You've got a problem with someone, deal with them and tell it to them, dont go behind their backs to their wife or family. Thats low.

Things change year to year but as long as the team continues to be competitive and fans feel the drafting and player development is offering long term promise Calgary will be a great place for a GM to come and work.
Not to mention the fact that if fans are unhappy or dont like the rebuild Brian Burke will send Brian McGrattan to their house to punch them in the stomach.

I don't know if I would want bylsma. Hartley seems like the right coach for this team during a. Rebuild. Bylsma is the better coach for a playoff/contending team IMO. Which we are definitely a few years away. Bylsma is a good coach but a but overrated In my opinion. He has had a good team in Pittsburgh, with two franchise players

I'm not surprised. Bylsma couldn't even figure out to play Iginla on the RW. I hope they keep him though, I'd be pretty content if they never won anything else now that Crosby already has a Cup.

I've never really been a huge supporter of Hartley but he's coaching this team to be better than they are. It's waaay too hard to say what to do with him if a different coach like Bylsma becomes available. I just worry that Hartley may have a hard time with "star players" or if his hard work mentality is going to only last so long.

I'm just glad that during the rebuild, Hartley is instilling the right kind of work ethic into our younger players and it looks like Burke sees it too.

I must be oblivious to the situation, but why would Bylsma get canned? His team has currently has 101 points, has made the playoffs (again), and is on a two game winning streak. Is this not good enough?

Well, I guess to answer my own question, a dead cat rotting in a garbage can could post a winning record with that talented roster.

3 to 5 years from now when our young guys become stars, we can have this conversation.

Mark me down as wanting Hartley et al to stay. I like the team effort, I like the team identity, I like the enthusiasm and I like the stability.

I do not want to jump at the next shiny object to come by. When you start thinking like that you end up firing your coach over Skype - and we know how that turns out.

I think Bylsma is a terrible coach. He seems to always get out-coached in the playoffs now. Doesn't seem to come up with any answers. Pens fans really want him out (for the most part).

I feel if there is a coach change it won't be a decision Burke makes but the new GM but on the flip side I imagine that Burke will strongly recommend Hartley to his newly hired GM.

If the Penguins don't get to the final four I would say his firing will be guaranteed and Trotz job will hinge on the GM's as if the GM gets fired there would be a total house cleaning. I actually see the Oilers taking a run at either one of these guys as contrary to the reports of Eakins getting another season I think he may get the axe as that team has played horribly under him and it's pretty obvious he's not NHL material.

That wouldnt be a terrible idea, but Poile and Trotz are basically permanent fixtures in Nashville. I dont see their jobs as actually being in any jeopardy.

Maybe early in the season I would be in favour of Blysma(if he gets canned) replacing Hartley but based on the past few months I don't think so. I think Hartley is doing a heck of a job making sure his team (close to last place) are very focus and he's been teaching them to be a winner. Not so sure about Barry Trotz though. I like the exciting Calgary Flames team and Trotz' idea of exciting hockey is dump and chase all night. Take off Shea Weber in that team and you'll watch the second coming of boring Phoenix Coyotes hockey. So, I hope Burke or whoever make the decision in hiring or re-signing coaches keep Hartley and the boys for at least another 2-3 more seasons. Also, no thanks to Randy Carlyle once he gets canned by Maple Laffs after this season.
