He was in critical condition and needed medical attention; I don't think coming up with the greatest cover story was priority.
It's likely his girlfriend who came up with it, and it's not like she had much time (or a calm state of mind) to think up a better plot.

I'm not defending their lies, but does anyone really expect a strong coverup story in a life threatening situation like that?

I've used Kijiji a lot, and almost always have done the transaction in people's homes. It really isn't that hard to weed out the sketchy people long before actual business is conducted. The overreaction by people early in this thread is hilarious.

Not if you're in that world. His attackers would be following the story, trying to figure out if he's cooperating, and if so he'd likely be attacked again, and judging by the severity of that attack, he'd likely be killed the second time.

Not defending him or justifying his cover story btw, just explaining why criminals act the way they do in life threatening situations like this.

Everyone always sees these stories where victim's don't cooperate and go "what an idiot, why doesn't want to help find the attackers".

They're of course right about them being idiots. But they're idiots about getting into that world in the first place. Once they're there, though, staying quiet or lying is the smartest self preservation tactic in a situation that's bad enough that the media is covering it.
