Don't know why that has to be the case and don't necessarily believe it to be a foregone conclusion with someone like Burke around.

The Mason Raymonds found via UFA can't do the same thing Stempniak does for us right now? As ricardodw will tell anyone who will listen, he's giving us awful production for the ice time and opportunity he gets.

Agreed - I think right now this team lines up to be the worst in the NHL next year - and by a sizable margin.
Which might be absolutely what is required - with a phenom at the top of the draft. There hasn't been a better time since Crosby to suck.
Assuming you win the lottery.

It will get worse, much worse, especially after the deadline and next season.

The real question is how many goals this team will score over the rest of the season?

Based on the last seven games, they should score a grand total of 28 goals over the remaining 39 games of the season.

However, as a heady optimist, I believe the Flames will score at least 30 goals over the rest of the season!

This thread almost reminds me of that guy who pretty much gave up on the team once Iginla was traded... LOL.

Agreed. This team is going to be brutal for at least 3 years if not more.

Short-term pain folks, short-term pain. *Hopefully. Unless we 'Oilers' things up.

I thought rock bottom was last year before the team finally decided to rebuild.

This is much better. We actually have a cupboard full of prospects that are playing well.

this definitely is not rock bottom, not by a far margin. Atleast now we kind of have hope. Rock bottom is never being competitive and having no hope for the distant future. If Klimchuk, Baertschi, Monahan, Kanzig, Poirier, Gillies and Gaudreau can develop into legitimate NHL players that other contending teams would actually want and play then we have hope, if not, then we hit rock bottom. We'll know in 3-4 years. Until then it'll be waiting to see, management could screw it up hardcore (ala the greasers), hopefully not.

What, no GIFs of The Rock?
This is not rock bottom. This is a team who's just starting a rebuild, a team filled with vets who don't seem to care anymore because they know that by the deadline, they're gone. At the draft latest.

I expect we'll see a lot more exciting hockey once we bring up bunch of guys from the Heat. Sort of like last year. Might not be winning very much, but I expect we'll at least see some goals, some energy and enthusiasm from our players.

BTW, rock bottom is when you are rebuilding for 6 years, in that time have 3 straight first overall picks and draft in the top 10 three more times, and still suck more than a team who's been shutout in 5 of the last 7 games.

This is one of things that lets me cope with all this. This is a colossal car crash that makes the one in Blues Brothers look like a fender bender. Having a chance to get a genuine generational talent makes it okay. Even Eichel wouldn't be a bad consolation (I cross my fingers that the draft will be similar to the the year Ovechkin and Malkin went 1 and 2).

It really isn't only how bad you are, but more importantly, when you are that bad that counts.

We're not even into the car crash stage yet. We're in the part where the brakes are locked, the collision is going to happen, the passenger's in the back seat are screaming, you reach over to arm block the front seat passenger from going through the window and realize with horror that you just got a handful of 89 year old grandma boob and you strangely liked it. Sounds like the end of the world right.

Next year is the we just went over the cliff, holy crap this car is a pinto and the gas tank ignited and one of the passengers in the back just simultaneously vomited and poo'd creating a god awful smell that makes your eyes water and your higher brain functions shut down.

the year after that is the question, do we land on a pile of pillows, or do we get dashed on sharp rocks and thorns.

At the start of this year I figured the team would struggle to score 160 goals...it's looking very realistic. I also agree what is being shown right now is what we will likely see for a good year and a half if not more. Which is why rebuilds sound great on paper, but when you suffer through watching it, it can be extremely painful.

Crappy thing is, last place is only a 25% chance at McDavid. Thanks Oilers.

If we do finish last and lose the lottery, hopefully Eichel is better than Bobby Ryan.

Knowing the Flames luck, they'll probably be 30th overall next year, but lose the draft lottery to the 6th place team, which would be the ultimate insult to injury considering the number of times Flames drafted in that position and never drafting top 5 (until this year of course).

Edit: Heck, if this actually happens next year, I volunteer to be permabanned from Calpuck for jinxing the Flames like that.

If they finish 30th the worst they will pick is 2nd overall.

For sure, but they'd lose out on McDavid. Which would really really suck...

On the plus side the goalies are getting lots of NHL experience from tough competition without any real pressure. Doesn't really matter if we lose 6-0 or 1-0 so all those shots definitely help them learn to cope. Can only imagine how infuriating it is to get hung out to dry by the d 6 times in a game.
