This isnt actually a bad idea. I'm sure that those receiving welfare and spending it on drugs are probably a significant minority, but still, if it could be used to help people then its worth considering.

I'm not a proponent of drug testing for welfare, I think theres far too many negatives than positives, but I also think that we should be more careful when handing out money and if we're offered an opportunity to help drug addicts kick the habit we should consider taking it.

In light of recent developments that might not be a bad idea.

The irony, in the big picture is this kind of topic receives a social media hot topic, while we continually allow the banks, financial systems and other MASSIVE forces that harm us alone.

This nonsense is a distraction like most of the crap people today get upset about, while ignoring the large problems facing us. Rome's appeal to the masses in the Colosseum is as valid today as it ever was, if not more.

I wish CP had a social worker that could jump into these threads.

Anyhow, this happy though is nice, but the rate of addicts that go back to drugs is quite high.

So I again ask, offering them help is nice, testing seems to be pointless.

Jimmy fails a test, gets help, then fails again.. You then deny him welfare?

Our goal should be to help addicts get clean, and reduce the cycle of violence associated with the drug trade in general.

Instead of drug testing for welfare, perhaps we should end the war on drugs to begin with? And maybe open up the clean drug clinics for addicts to get 'help?'

I agree. Looks like I'm in the minority though.

I assume you're referring to the American's war on drugs, since we don't really have one in Canada (at least to the same extent).

We didn't pass an omnibus crime bill that imposed mandatory sentencing for minor drug offenses?

I think there would be a much better return on starting some sort of "work for welfare" type of program. Obviously people with physical or mental limitations should be able to get a pass, but people who are able bodied and are continually on welfare should be doing something to contribute.

It could help end some cycles of poverty, and might even lead to some sort of employment opportunites.

We're certainly heading that way.

Instead of drug testing, maybe we should increase the amount of support for mental illness for those on disability, welfare and I.E.?
