That's fairly subjective...

What about a good bow hunter that can put a deer down immediately vs a crappy rifle hunter who shoots a deer 3 times and only severely injures it, and it runs 3km before it dies? Both weapons can kill quickly.

sharpened arrows cut a fairly large hole and keep it pretty open. A good shot is better than a bullet. Have to remember that you aren't going for head/brain instant kills, its gotta be through the heart and/or lungs, for a quick bleed out.

This reminds me of a friend who decided to try bow hunting for deer one year. He chased this poor deer over a long distance, shooting a large number of arrows into it, until one of the arrows managed to hit a fatal part of his body. The poor deer finally dropped, looking like a pin cushion. Needless to say, the experience was so traumatic for both he and the deer, that he never hunted with a bow again.

I think it takes a lot of experience, skill and patience to successfully hunt with a bow. And a person really has to know what he is doing.

I haven't hunted in years. I've been wanting to get back into it, and to do it with a bow. Definitely think I'll do a couple seasons of rifle hunting first, and then transition to bow if I feel like I can make the clean kill.

Bow hunting is a completely different scenario. You are simply not going to hit a dear at 400-500 yards like good hunters can with a rifle. So you have to use deer stands, and other methods to get close. Which is fine if it works and you don't mind sitting and waiting.

But I have also seen and heard many bow hunters talk about how hard it is to kill a deer with a clean shot.
